Researchers at the University of Texas Medical
Branch (UTMB), Galveston have discovered an
inhalable vaccine that can protect rhesus
macaque monkeys against severe illness and
death when they were exposed to the Ebola virus.
Rhesus Macaques are among the most
widespread primates after humans and are the
monkeys most widely used in biomedical
research.
Medics in full gear to avoid contracting the virus
Findings published in the Journal of Clinical
Investigation suggests that the linings of the
airways may be an important point of entry for
the Ebola virus into the body.
Alexander Bukreyev, a professor of virology at the
University said the study demonstrates successful
aerosol vaccination against a viral hemorrhagic
fever for the first time.
“A single-dose aerosol vaccine would enable both
prevention and containment of Ebola infections, in
a natural outbreak setting where health care
infrastructure is lacking or during bioterrorism
and biological warfare scenarios,” he added.
“A needle-free, inhalable vaccine against Ebola
presents certain advantages. Immunization will
not require trained medical personnel,” Michelle
Meyer, a postdoctoral fellow in the pathology
department at the UTMB further stated.
In the new study, Bukreyev and colleagues
administered the inhaled vaccine to six rhesus
macaque monkeys.
A month later, the team injected the monkeys
with a dose of Ebola virus that was 1,000 times
the level that would normally be deadly.
None of the monkeys died or developed severe
cases Ebola, although a few developed mild
depression.
The new vaccine is made from a mild, very
common respiratory virus, called human
parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3), that has been
engineered to include genes from the Ebola virus
that encode the proteins of the virus’s outer coat.
The researchers found that the engineered virus
infiltrated monkey’s respiratory tracts, and
replicated there, triggering the cells to produce
many copies of the Ebola virus’s coat.
The immune system, in turn, recognized that outer
coat as foreign, and activated a response.
The new vaccine would be an improvement over
other vaccines not only because it could be
delivered by people other than medical
professionals.
Researchers said the vaccine triggered two
different forms of immunity — a “local” immune
response, in the mucous membranes of the
respiratory tract, as well as a body-wide immune
system response, in form of immune cells
circulating throughout the body.
Most other Ebola vaccines only stimulate
systemic immunity, so the new vaccine could add
another layer of protection.
The National Institutes of Health is currently
starting a Phase I trial of the vaccine, in a small
number of people, to see if the drug is safe.
Further studies are needed to confirm that the
vaccine is both safe and effective, and may likely
take at least three years before the vaccine be
used in the field.
The 18-month-old west African Ebola epidemic
has sickened more than 27,000 and left more
than 15,000 dead, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone, according to the World Health
Organization.
Vaccines and treatments have been used in the
field, either in organised clinical trials or in certain
special situations.
But many of the vaccines are shots that must be
administered by people with at least some
medical training.
But in the parts of Africa hard-hit by the outbreak,
Ebola has decimated the health workforce
especially hard, leading to severe shortages in
doctors and nurses.

An Egyptian court has sentenced former
President Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in jail
for ordering the arrest and torture of
protesters during his rule.
It is the first verdict he has received since his
ousting and is one of several trials he faces.
Morsi was deposed by the army in July 2013
following mass street protests against his rule.
Since then, the authorities have banned his
Muslim Brotherhood movement and arrested
thousands of his supporters.
Morsi and 14 other Brotherhood figures escaped
a more serious charge of inciting the killing of
protesters, which could have carried the death
sentence.
Most of the other defendants were also given 20-
year prison sentences. Morsi's legal team have
said they will appeal.
This verdict is just one of Mr Morsi faces. They
include:
*Colluding with foreign militants in a plot to
free Islamists in mass prison breaks during
the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak
*Espionage and conspiring to commit
terrorist acts in Egypt with the Palestinian
movement Hamas, Lebanon's Hezbollah
and Iran's Revolutionary Guards
*Endangering national security by leaking
state secrets and sensitive documents to
Qatar via the Doha-based Al Jazeera network

APP 2003:
General Buhari entry in the Presidential race in 2003 caused so much panic IN Obasanjo and PDP camp. Reason is that the PDP was relatively unpopular in the SW in 1999 and the North Was won by PDP due to the PDM machinery of Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Buhari's entry snatched away the Northern Luxury leaving the SW to the open. If there was any region PDP dread most, it was/is the South West.

Rather than field a Popular South Westerner as VP like Mr Olu Falae who would have brought lots of Yoruba votes to the ticket, they instead decided on Senator Chuba Okadigbo, who couldn't even win his ward in the said poll. PDP won the SW coupled with SE and SS votes and was declared victors.

AC/ANPP 2007
AC 2007:
Atiku Abubakar was the AC Candidate and incumbent Vice President. The Niger-Delta hostility was at its peak. PDP was smart to pick a VP candidate from the Ijaw Region but was "not too smart" to pick a relatively unpopular and failure Goodluck Jonathan who would have lost his governorship seat(if he had contested). AC should have made the smart move by picking a popular SSner as their VP Candidate, like Adams Oshiomole who made name for himself as Labour Union Boss. The AC also enjoyed sympathy from the SW and SS states of Rivers, Edo, and Delta as at then, Oshiomole had the goodwill as man of the people. But AC fielded Senator Ben Obi, who couldn't deliver his polling unit(He's is Jonathan's Adviser at Present).

ANPP 2007:
GMB enjoyed cult following in the North, he needs a part of the South. His bet bet would have been the South West as at then. It may look funny but the Yorubas have always been voting enmasse for a ticket involving their son. Take the Bull by the horn, field a Gani Fawehinmi as running-mate, he was very popular across the Niger too. With ANPP political machinery then and Gani's credibility, the SW votes will be smiling at them plus a chunk of the SS. But instead ANPP settled for Ume-Ezeoke (to pacify the SE) but shamefully, Ume Ezeoke not only lost his village, he also led the group that betrayed Buhari at the tribunal and also joined PDP's Yar adua's government.

APC 2015:
APC should field a popular South Westerner as Vice to General Buhari, like Engr. Rauf Aregbesola(loved by his people and the Yorubas) or Mr. Raji Fashola(Loved by the Yoruba intellectuals, elite and seen as a pacesetter).
If they must go beyoud South West, then I support the Candidacy of Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, Considering his relative popularity in the SW and also Ikwerre votes in Rivers State. His candidacy will help split the Rivers vote(which is the Highest in the SS). Another option is Mr. Adams Oshiomole. He may not give 100% of Edo Votes but with the backing of Oba Erediawa plus his incumbency, he will deliver majority Edo votes(may not be super majority).

Why skip 2011 when Tunde Bakare a south westerner was his running mate and he still lost woefully to Jonathan in south west?
