Russia, despite its size and its acclaimed supposed stupendous military might, has been struggling to subdue Ukraine since 2022—an embarrassing display of failure. But even that doesn't compare to Nigeria’s historical incompetence. Backed by global superpowers like the Soviet Union, Britain, and Egypt, Nigeria still couldn't achieve anything meaningful on the battlefield against a blockaded Biafra. Instead, its only "victory" was the mass starvation of innocent women and children. Both Russia and Nigeria seem to be nothing more than oversized burdens to their respective continents—offering nothing but chaos, stagnation, and disgrace.

A 🇷🇺 Russian citizen was released as part of an exchange involving 🇺🇸 American teacher Marc Fogel and will return to Russia soon, the Kremlin said.

Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated Wednesday that a recent intensification of contacts between Russian and US departments led to Fogel’s release, as well as “one of the citizens of the Russian Federation” who is “currently being held in detention in the United States.”

The individual “will soon return to Russia,” according to Peskov, who added that his identity will be revealed once he is on Russian soil.

Fogel arrived at the White House late Tuesday draped in an American flag and was greeted by US President Donald Trump, who said it was “an honor to have played a small role” in his release.

Another American is expected to be released, according to Trump. A number of Americans are still being held in Russia, and at least two have been classified as wrongfully detained: Stephen Hubbard and Russian-American dual national Ksenia Karelina.

The deal to release Fogel, who was designated as wrongfully detained by the US State Department, was negotiated by Trump, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, “and the President’s advisers,” according to a statement from national security adviser Mike Waltz.

In an extraordinary move, Witkoff had personally gone to Russia to bring back Fogel, Waltz’s statement indicated. There has been no known high-level US travel to Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CNN on Tuesday that while Fogel’s release is not linked to ending Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, he thinks it’s a “good sign” that Russia was willing to cooperate. Speaking about the war, he said: “We don’t just want to see it end. We want to see it end in a way that’s sustainable.”

Moscow has joined Washington in calling for Ukraine to hold elections, sparking concern in Kyiv as it attempts to fend off Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion.

The surprising alignment has stoked fears in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin is aiming to play Kyiv and Washington off against each other over how to proceed to end the war.

Over the weekend, United States President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said: “In most democracies, elections take place even during wartime. I think it’s important. I believe it’s good for democracy.

The beauty of a strong democracy is having more than one potential candidate.”

Moscow, where Putin has frequently declared that he does not recognize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a legitimate leader rowed in behind Kellogg on Monday, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling reporters in Moscow that “President Zelenskyy’s term of office has ended.”

He said that the “legitimization of Ukraine’s leadership” would be necessary as part of any peace process.

Kyiv, for its part, fears that holding elections at this juncture would imperil Ukrainian cohesion and open the country up to destabilizing Russian influence campaigns.

Kellogg’s remarks, and the Kremlin’s quick embrace of them, have set off alarm bells.

A former Ukrainian minister, who was granted anonymity to freely discuss the sensitive subject, told POLITICO that “the alignment on elections between Washington and Moscow is worrisome,” adding, “I see it as the first evidence that Trump and Putin agree that they want Zelenskyy out.”

The Kremlin didn’t make clear if peace negotiations are conditional on Ukraine holding elections, or what sequence Russia has in mind, but Moscow said until political legitimacy has been established no final deal could be agreed.

Kellogg, also, wasn’t clear on the sequencing of elections and ending hostilities.

About 350 passengers were safely evacuated after a 🇺🇸 Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) train caught fire.

Extraordinary images captured the moment a train carrying 350 passengers burst into flames, sparking mass evacuations en route to Delaware.

The six-car SEPTA train was traveling from Philadelphia when flames tore through a carriage near Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania about 6.15pm on Thursday.

Pictures of the incident show thick, grey plumes of smoke billowing from the train, which is lit up with orange flames within.

Passenger Dnasia Buckner told Fox News that she began smelling smoke about 15 minutes into the journey.

'We had to get up and relocate to another car and then we had to get up and relocate again and that's when I started to see smoke coming from the side of the train,' she said.

'As people were walking by, they said the train's on fire, but the conductors aren't saying anything.'

Eventually, conductors opened the train doors and instructed all passengers to disembark, a process which Buckner said took about 15 minutes itself.

Firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Service to Wilmington has been halted and Amtrak service along the Northeast Corridor is also impacted.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch credited quick-thinking staff for keeping passengers safe.

'Very quick action by our crews that that helped allow this to be a safe outcome,' he said.

'We don't know where this started, just that it was in the area underneath the train and then obviously engulfed the train in flames.'
