At least 30 people have been injured after two trams collided in a horror crash in 🇫🇷 France.

A large rescue operation is underway after the vehicles collided in the tunnel of Strasbourg station on Saturday afternoon, according to local media.

Five people are in critical condition according to an initial assessment, the French outlet Actu17 reported. The news website added that a switching error could be the cause of the accident.

It is understood that one of the trams accidentally took another track before hitting a second tram.

In a post on x, French police warned: “Tram traffic interrupted in both directions at Strasbourg station following a tram accident.”

🇲🇽 President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday that Mexico was sending a team of firefighters and military personnel to Los Angeles to support the fight against the devastating fires.

As major fires continue to rage in and around Los Angeles, help battling the blazes has come from across the country — and from across international borders, including from Canada and Mexico.

Five wildfires remained active in Los Angeles County on Friday, scorching more than 36,000 acres or about 56 square miles, an area about the size of Miami, according to Cal Fire.

“We’re going to send a support team to Los Angeles,” she told reporters at her morning press conference.

She said the team is made up of National Forestry Commission firefighters and Ministry of Defense disaster relief workers.

Sheinbaum said that the decision to send the team to Los Angeles came after Foreign Affairs Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente spoke with U.S. and California government officials.

She said that the members of the team are completing the relevant immigration paperwork in order to enter the United States.

“We’re going to help, not just because the people and government of Mexico have always been generous, but also because there are a lot of Mexicans in this part of the United States,” Sheinbaum said.

🇺🇸 Donald Trump has said that a meeting is being arranged between himself and 🇷🇺 Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US president-elect gave no timeline for when the meeting might take place.

"He wants to meet too and we are setting it up," he said in remarks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Russian news agency Tass quotes Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying that the US has not yet formally requested a meeting.

Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine soon after he takes office on 20 January and has expressed scepticism about US military and financial support for Kyiv.

"President Putin wants to meet," he said on Thursday.

"He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That's a bloody mess."

Trump has nominated Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant-general in the US military, to be special envoy to Ukraine and Russia for his second administration.

Kellogg set out his ideas for how the US could bring about an end to the war in a research paper published by the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think thank, in April last year.

He proposed that Ukraine should only get further US aid if it agreed to participate in peace talks with Moscow.

Three major wildfires that began Tuesday continued to spread unabated across 🇺🇸 Los Angeles County early Wednesday, propelled by powerful winds, as authorities ordered the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and warned the situation could worsen in the morning.

Three major wildfires—the Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire and the Hurst Fire—now cover nearly 4,500 acres of area around Los Angeles County, with 0% of the fires contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

A major traffic jam was reported in the area as tens of thousands of people attempted to flee the fire—including some who reportedly abandoned their vehicles on the road—which prevented emergency vehicles from reaching the affected areas.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Tuesday night as he urged residents to heed the evacuation order and said, “This is a highly dangerous windstorm creating extreme fire risk, and we’re not out of the woods.”

Newsom’s office also said the state had secured a “Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources” to tackle all three fires.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning (warm temperatures, strong winds and low humidity) for Southern California that spans from Tuesday to Wednesday in the Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and from Tuesday to Thursday in the San Bernadino, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.
