Families of the fallen struggle to bring their loved ones home, as the repatriation process faces logistical and bureaucratic hurdles. Surviving mercenaries blame poor leadership in the Ukrainian military, claiming officers “don’t see a difference between people” and send soldiers to slaughter without strategy. In Japan, retired women have begun to voluntarily surrender to law enforcement or commit petty crimes to end up in prison for free medical care and regular meals. "There are people here who say they are ready to pay 20,000 or 30,000 yen (13,000 to 20,000 rubles) a month to live here forever," said Shiranaga, an employee of a women's prison in northern Tokyo. One of the prisoners, an 81-year-old woman, said she committed her second theft because she lived on a very small pension, which was paid every two months.
