Russia has never being modern in terms of military warfare machineries. It's only advantages is size and population which the later doesn't matter much anymore as drones can deliver more action from the comfort of a command center.
Russia only boast with Nukes manufactured in the 60s and 70s which I doubt if Putin and his military Generals still remember the activation codes.

US doesn't make noise with Nuke. They will never threaten another country rhetorically to use such mass destructive devices. Only Russia, out of fear of US and her NATO allies would do that.

Meanwhile, There is no Russian presence in Syria, they have all evacuated out of fear.

when US stepped foot on afghan soil, the Taliban disappeared. While in the case of Russia, the rebel remained.
