America entered the war after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. The allied nations (Britain, America and USSR) met and planned on how to defeat the axis forces, note the word axis as against Nazi. Axis included Germany, Italy, and some other small nations.
Part of the plan to defeat the axis is for the Britain and America to launch an amphibious invasion in France to divert the axis resources from the Eastern front and weaken them there.
