Sudan has for the past month been gripped by intense fighting between the army and rival paramilitaries embroiled in a power struggle 18 months after a military coup derailed the country’s transition to civilian rule. Hundreds of people have been killed and nearly a million displaced in the war between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Here are the main developments in the conflict: April 15: Fighting begins On April 15, explosions rocked the capital Khartoum. The fighting came days after the second postponement of the signing of a final deal on returning to civilian rule, due to a disagreement over the integration of the RSF into the regular army. The paramilitaries and army both accused each other of attacking first. The RSF said it controls Khartoum airport, the presidential palace and other key sites. The army, which said it carried out air strikes on RSF bases, insists it is still in charge. Fighting also erupted in the western region of Darfur – still reeling from a brutal war that began in 2003 – where three UN World Food Programme employees were killed. Civilian leaders in Sudan called for an immediate ceasefire, as do the African Union, the United Nations, the United States and Britain, among other countries. April 22: Rush to evacuate In the days that followed, countries the world over rushed to prepare evacuations of their nationals and those of other countries as the fighting escalated. On April 22, Saudi Arabia became the first country to announce the successful evacuation of civilians from the battle-ravaged country. Thousands of Khartoum residents also flee the fighting along roads lined with corpses and burned-out military vehicles. The United States military evacuated US diplomatic personnel from Khartoum. Numerous other countries followed. April 25: Failed truces, jailbreak Multiple truces were announced but none has been respected. The United States and Saudi Arabia negotiated a 72-hour nationwide ceasefire starting April 25. The paramilitaries and the army repeatedly extended the ceasefire but continued to trade fire, accusing each other of violating it. On the same day, Ahmed Harun, a leading figure in the regime of ousted strongman Omar al-Bashir, and who is charged with crimes against humanity, announced that he had escaped from prison with other former regime members. Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on genocide charges over the war in Darfur, had already been transferred to a hospital before the fighting began, the Sudanese army said. The violence reached a new peak on April 27 when fighter jets pound the paramilitaries’ positions in Khartoum. On May 4, US President Joe Biden said the fighting “must end” and authorised potential new sanctions against those responsible for the bloodshed. May 5: 750 killed More than 750 fatalities have been reported since battles began, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. UN special representative Volker Perthes said armed “fortune seekers” from Mali, Chad and Niger are joining the fight. May 6: Jeddah talks US and Saudi-backed talks between the army and the RSF began in the Saudi port city of Jeddah but have yet to yield a ceasefire, more than a week later. On May 11, both sides agreed to allow urgently needed humanitarian aid to reach war-struck areas, committing “to ensuring the protection of civilians”. The UN said on May 12 that the conflict had caused 200,000 people to flee the country, bringing the total number of displaced people to nearly a million. https://dailytrust.com/timeline-one-month-of-war-in-sudan/

A security guard at Greater Scholars International School– a private nursery and primary school in Lagos, identified simply as David, has been accused of defiling a four-year-old pupil of the school. The parents of the minor, who want to be identified simply as Mr and Mrs Olusola, told PREMIUM TIMES Saturday that the pupil complained about “pains in her vagina” and subsequently confirmed that one Mr David assaulted her. While the parents revealed that two medical reports already confirmed “injury and physical trauma” in her vagina, the spokesperson for the police in Lagos State, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Friday, tweeted that the suspect has been “arrested and is still in custody.” Mr Hundeyin added that “a medical report that would ensure a conviction is being expected.” The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Agency (DSVA) also tweeted on Saturday morning that it is on the case and that it would be transferred to the Gender unit of the Lagos State Police Command before it is charged to court on Monday. “Upon seeing the bruises, the paediatrician transferred us to a gynaecologist to run a test, who confirmed the injury and physical trauma as a result of an attempted forced penetration,” the mother said. “On 3 May 2023, we received a report of this case through our toll-free line and acted promptly by referring the child for medical and psychosocial support. “We also alerted the Ajiwe FSU Police Division for investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody,” the tweet read in parts. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES, the Founder of The Unbroken Foundation- a non-governmental organisation focused on social and human rights, Sonia Obi-Okodo, said her organisation, in collaboration with the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, is following up on the case. She noted that both organisations advocate and challenge all forms of gender-related violence. “With the parent’s reports about what happened to their child, and the girl’s account of who actually did it to her, it is enough for us to swing into action,” Ms Obi-Okodo said. Allegation The incident became public Friday when a Twitter user, with the handle, @Omolomo, accused the school of hiring thugs to threaten the minor’s parents, who had gone to the school to report the results of the medical examination. The handler, who also posted a photo of the school’s Director and the accused, claimed that the school management had been reluctant and allegedly attempted to sweep the matter under the carpet. More details Giving further details, Mr and Mrs Olusola said their daughter, who is now in pre-school, was enrolled in the school in January 2022, adding that they noticed she had been unnecessarily “downcast” before confirming the assault. “She cried about her vagina pains when she went to urinate on Sunday, 30 April; then we saw bruises when we checked with a touch light. This prompted us to take her to the hospital,” Mrs Olusola narrated. She noted that they immediately took the daughter to Lifeline Children’s Hospital, Lekki, in Lagos, for a medical examination. “Upon seeing the bruises, the paediatrician transferred us to a gynaecologist to run a test, who confirmed the injury and physical trauma as a result of an attempted forced penetration. “We went ahead to the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, and it was the same result. Though they told us her hymen is still intact.” Mr Olusola also noted that the 4-year-old said when “she fell down while playing with her friend, the security guard told her there is plenty of dirt in her “wee wee” i.e. her vagina, that he wants to wash it. “So maybe that was how he lured her. He might be doing the same to other girls in school,” he added. Parents displeased with school Speaking further, Mrs Olusola said for the past week, since they withdrew the child from the school due to sexual molestation, the school had not contacted them. “As a mother, it hurts me so bad thinking about what he did to her and what she went through,” she told PREMIUM TIMES on the phone, even as she cried. “If I were the owner of the school, I would have taken action. If they had put the same energy into trying to resolve this instead of silencing us, it would have been resolved amicably by just arresting the guard without dragging the school. “We are trying to get justice for our daughter by all means,” she said. School keeps mute When PREMIUM TIMES contacted the school, only one of the three mobile numbers on their official website was answered. The official, who refused to give an identity, declined to comment on the matter. “The matter is already being investigated by the police, so we wouldn’t be able to discuss it. Thank you,” the official said and ended the call. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/598353-parents-accuse-school-guard-of-defiling-4-year-old-pupil-in-lagos.html

At least five people have been injured in an explosion at a local bar in the Dorowa area of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital. The incident happened on Sunday around 9 p.m. at the bar located in the centre of the city. Dorowa is a densely populated part of the city with several bars where burkutu, a locally brewed ale, is sold. The loud sound of the explosion was heard throughout the community, making residents scamper for safety. An owner of a bar that sells burkutu, Lami Ali, told PREMIUM TIMES on Monday that the explosion occurred at the peak of business with many people around relaxing and enjoying their drinks. She said no one died but at least four persons sustained minor injuries while a lady was severely injured on her leg and is being treated at the Federal Medical Center, Jalingo. Spokesperson of the Taraba Police Command, Usman Abdullahi, however, told PREMIUM TIMES that only two people were injured in the explosion. He said one person was treated and discharged immediately while the second person was being treated at a hospital. Mr Abdullahi said the police have sent experts to the community to determine the cause of the explosion and to arrest those responsible if the investigation reveals it was a criminal act. Taraba State has been witnessing a spate of violent attacks, including bomb explosions, perpetrated by Islamist insurgents. In April 2022, at least six people were killed and over 16 others injured in an explosion at another drinking joint within the Iware cattle market axis of Taraba State. Two days later, another explosion in the city centre injured several people. Many households and restaurants across the country are now resorting to tomato pastes and other available alternatives for their cooking as the price of fresh tomatoes has gone beyond the reach of many Nigerians, Daily Trust reports. A market survey conducted in major cities across the country showed that the price of the commodity has risen from less than N20,000 for a big basket in the last few weeks to around N70,000, depending on the market and location. Reports by our correspondents showed that in states where tomatoes are cultivated, including Kano, Katsina and Benue states, the price of the commodity has risen from N17,000–N20,000 a basket to N40,000-N45,000. On the other hand, in Abuja, Kwara, Oyo, Rivers, Lagos and Enugu states, the price has risen to as high as N70,000, pushing many households and restaurants to the edge. The size of the baskets is about the same across most of the markets.
