A Lagos State civil servant, who simply wished to be referred to as Mujidat, has narrated how N150,000 vanished from her First Bank account after her debit card got stuck in an Access Bank automatic teller machine (ATM). While speaking with FIJ on Tuesday evening, Mujidat said the incident happened between February 27 and March 7. “On February 27, I visited the Access Bank ATM located in Idi Araba, Mushin, Lagos, to withdraw some money using my First Bank debit card, but unfortunately, the card got swallowed by the bank’s machine,” said Mujidat. The Strange Debit Aler Mujidat Received. “The very moment the incident happened, I instantly blocked the card using First Bank’s USSD code. “On March 7, I then visited a First Bank branch located in Oshodi to request a new debit card. “Immediately, I received the new card and had it activated. However, I shockingly received an authorised debit alert of N150,000 on my account. “The debit alert I received showed a web or online payment that had been consummated way before I received the new card. “This then meant that the old card that got trapped at the Access Bank ATM had subsequently been used to perpetrate fraud. It was quite shocking to also know that the card could still be used to perpetrate fraud despite the fact that I had used First Bank’s USSD code to block it. I have since sent several messages to First Bank on the matter, but all the financial institution’s officials keep telling me is that the issue is still being investigated. I am beginning to feel that this is just a holding response, and that the bank will never shed light on how the money got stolen from my account. “It’s been almost a month since the incident happened and, unfortunately, a resolution is still not in sight yet.” FIJ sent an email to both Access and First Bank’s customer service desks on Wednesday morning, but it had not been responded to at press time. https://fij.ng/article/access-atm-snatched-first-bank-customers-card-in-lagos-her-n150000-vanished-afterwards/

CBN Announces New ₦5,000 & ₦10,000 Notes "In a bid to reduce cash handling challenges, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 notes featuring iconic Nigerian leaders. The notes will be in circulation from May 1, 2025." CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA PRESS RELEASE CBN Unveils New ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 Banknotes to Enhance Cash Transactions Abuja, April 1, 2025 – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially announced the introduction of two new denominations - ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes; as part of ongoing efforts to streamline cash transactions and improve liquidity management. According to the Deputy CBN Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., the move is aimed at reducing cash-handling costs and providing Nigerians with more efficient means of conducting large transactions. "The introduction of these new high-value denominations aligns with global best practices and will enhance economic activities while reducing the stress associated with carrying large amounts of cash," the Governor stated. The new ₦5,000 note will feature the portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, while the ₦10,000 note will showcase Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, both in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s development. Additionally, the new notes will incorporate enhanced security features, including color-changing ink, holograms, and anti-counterfeiting technology, making them impossible to replicate. The nationwide rollout will begin on May 1, 2025, with commercial banks instructed to start issuing the new notes via ATMs and over-the-counter transactions. Nigerians are advised to exchange their old Naira notes at banks before June 30, 2025, after which lower denominations may be phased out gradually. For further details, visit www.cbn.gov.ng/newcurrency. Signed: Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr. Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria
