A BUA truck carrying cartons of spaghetti has been attacked by hoodlums at the Dogarawa axis along the Zaria-Kano expressway.

The incident occurred around 3:15 pm, as the truck driver parked by the roadside to observe prayers.

Seizing the opportunity, the hoodlums swiftly descended on the vehicle, making away with every carton of spaghetti it carried.

An eyewitness, who had been trading in the area for over a decade, described the incident as unfortunate.

The attackers left no carton of spaghetti behind, leaving the truck emptied of its cargo.

This incident follows a similar trend observed recently when hoodlums hijacked trailers loaded with foodstuffs in the Suleja area of Niger State.

In response to the attack on the BUA truck, Daily Trust reports that a police team deployed to the scene swiftly apprehended five suspects.

This significant hike in food prices has become a pressing issue for the average Nigerian, making it increasingly difficult for many to afford basic meals.


When asked about the reasons behind this steep rise, market women and men offer varied explanations.

A substantial number attribute it to the government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, a move that has had far-reaching implications on transportation and, by extension, the cost of food distribution.

Others point to the broader economic challenges facing the country, citing unfavourable economic conditions as a key factor driving up prices.

The removal of fuel subsidies, intended as a policy measure to stabilize the nation’s economy, has inadvertently led to increased operational costs for farmers and traders.


The resultant effect is a pass-through of these costs to consumers, manifesting as higher food prices in markets across Nigeria. Additionally, the country’s struggle with inflation, fluctuating exchange rates, and reduced purchasing power has compounded the problem, placing a heavier burden on the common Nigerian.

The impact of these soaring food prices extends beyond just the economic sphere, touching on the very fabric of societal wellbeing.

Niger, Senegal, and Rwanda will be among the world’s highest growth economies in 2024, the World Bank said in its report on global economic prospects released this week.
Niger is forecast to grow at 12.5% this year driven by its oil sector which has made up for low uranium production.Its growth rate will only be surpassed by Guyana’s 38.2%, the South American country is also benefiting from an expanding oil sector. Three other African countries expected to be in the top 10 of highest growth economies are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia.
It reflects an expectation that while growth in Africa’s largest economies — Nigeria, South Africa and Angola — will drag on the rest of the region, economies that are not rich in resources will grow above the expected regional average of 3.8%. Indeed, sub Saharan Africa is expected to grow at 5% this year when Nigeria, South Africa and Angola are excluded from the analysis.
These three will experience modest improvements on the meager growth recorded last year. They posted a combined 1.8% growth in 2023, a decline from the previous year which the World Bank attributes to disruptive monetary policy moves like Nigeria’s currency redesign, revenue shortfalls from low oil production as in Angola, and infrastructure problems notable in South Africa’s energy and transportation sectors.
