PoliticsNigeria's !amalgamation A Celebration Of Slavery Bad History by xtripple(op): 8:07pm On Jul 31, 2013
Nigeria’s Amalgamation a celebration of slavery, bad history –Braithwaite on July 31, 2013 at 1:44 am in Politics BY DAUD OLATUNJI

ABEOKUTA-Former Presidential candidate of the defunct Nigeria Advance Party (NAP) Dr. Tunji Braithwaite on Tuesday, faulted the planned centenary anniversary of Nigeria’s amalgamation by the presidency in 2014, describing it as a celebration of slavery and bad history.

The Human Rights Activist and lawyer who wondered why despite the myriad of problems confronting the country, coupled with the level of poverty, the Federal government still plans to celebrate the Centenary anniversary of the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, lamented that the deplorable state of infrastructure in the country and the precarious security situation are enough reason to halt the celebration.

Dr. Tunji Braithwaite

Speaking as guest Lecturer at the 2013 Jesus Carnival, 37th Diocesan Anniversary and 170th Year of Christianity in Egbaland in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital ,Dr. Braithwaite said the celebration was a disgrace to the present generation of Nigerians.

He however, suggested that the president should celebrate the ‘’founding-fathers’ birth of Nigerian that over the years had blossomed into a strong, cohesive and socio/political vibrant force in the comity of nations.

‘’Instead of clinking glasses of champagne celebrating and venerating a bad history of enslavement, this generation, should use the occasion of its centenary to finally destroy its last inglorious relics and simultaneously birth a modern and progressive nation.

‘’The Die is cast!. Thee issue is not about 2015 elections or who becomes president or governor in 2015, there are a whole lot of fundamental and foundational matters to be urgently addressed before 2015’’.

“The current generation would themselves surely, hopefully in an orderly but firm manner, resolve this core issue of their own destiny,’’ he said.

He however, warned Jonathan to be wary of the serious implication of insecurity saying, the on-going revolution in Egypt is a classical lesson to Nigerian leaders that any charade and fraudulent elections contrived “will-nilly” is no guarantee of security of tenure of office for any unfit or insensitive government.

“The monster of king corruption and impunity in this country at every level of civil administration has exposed the tenuous and fragile foundation of Nigeria’s brand of democracy to the danger, it portends for the people.

“The reality today of the amalgamation is that both in legal and political context, the amalgamation bond expires in 2014 by effusion of time, unless the people concerned, now voluntarily agree its terms and or modify them.

“The single evil corruption has done to us manifests on cultism, examination malpractices among many others and it now appears as nothing is a taboo in Nigeria anymore. We prayed and worked for democracy but what type of democracy do we have now, do the people’s votes count? Are we getting the benefits of the abundance natural resources God gave us?.

“If you go to government offices, you will see huge generating sets but what about the poor who can’t afford it?, adding “If you know the huge amount this country generates, the question you will ask yourself is why should Nigerians suffer?”, Braithwaite said.

Foreign AffairsFighting Rages For Syria Town In Chemical Weapons Row by xtripple(op): 7:31pm On Jul 31, 2013
Fighting rages for Syria town in chemical weapons row on July 31, 2013 at 4:09 pm in News BEIRUT (AFP) – Syrian troops attacked rebel positions outside Khan al-Assal on Wednesday as they seek to recapture the northern town at the centre of rival chemical weapons accusations, a watchdog said.

Fierce fighting erupted on the outskirts of the town, which the rebels seized on July 22 week inflicting heavy losses on the army, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The army lost 150 soldiers over two days, 50 of them summarily executed after their capture, in an act condemned by the mainstream opposition leadership.

Khan al-Assal was the scene of what both the government and the opposition say was a chemical weapons attack that killed 30 people on March 19.

The Damascus government has pressed for Khan al-Assal to be the focus of a planned UN inquiry into a total of 13 allegations of chemical weapons use during Syria’s 28-month civil war.

The rebels’ capture of the town last week came as two UN envoys visited Damascus to thrash out the ground rules for UN weapons inspectors. They came away with an agreement but UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said he is still reviewing the details.

The oil refinery of the central city of Homs came under fire on Wednesday for the second time in a week, the Observatory said. Several of the refinery’s staff were wounded by “terrorist rocket fire,” the state SANA news agency said.

As UN efforts to convene a Russian-and US-backed peace conference have faltered, government forces have launched counter-offensives in the centre and north, as well as around the capital.

The opposition has vowed to step up efforts to capture the remaining government-held districts of second city Aleppo.

Six workers of a “scientific research centre” — or military research facility linked to the defence ministry — in Barzeh, a district of north Damascus, were killed and 19 wounded when rebels fired a mortar round at their bus, SANA said.

The Observatory gave a casualty toll of four dead and 20 wounded.

Elsewhere, the Observatory reported, two local dignitaries who have often served as mediators between rebels and loyalist forces were gunned down on Tuesday night in the northwestern city of Zabadani.

Nigeria: Rivers majority leader charged Posted By On July 31, 2013 @ 4:58 pm In Metro,News | 6 Comments

Okafor Ofiebor/Port Harcourt

Chidi Llyod, the Leader of Rivers House of Assembly was today brought before Justice L. L Nyordee of the Port-Harcourt high court.

Lloyd is facing a six- count charge of conspiracy to murder and assault, attempted murder and malicious damage arising from the fracas in the House of Assembly on 9 July.

He was brought amidst a very tight security mounted by the anti-riot policemen drawn from the Rivers State Police Command.

The law maker was unable to walk on his own but was aided by two security men into the court.

His arraignment provoked a heated argument between Worgu Boms, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Chika N.Dewingwe, SAN, representing the Nigeria Police. Dewingwe argued that under the the Nigerian Constitution, the police have the power to prosecute the lawmaker since the case is a criminal case.

Dewinigwe argued that the state Attorney-General of a state cannot take over the case when the accused has not taken a plea whether guilty or not. The case has been adjourned till August 6 for hearing.

Reacting to the state of health of Lloyd, the Deputy Speaker,Leyii Kwanee said the inability of Lloyd to walk on his feet was a confirmation of the alarm he had earlier raised that Lloyd was being tortured to extract information from him.
