An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo crashed into the Mediterranean on Thursday with 66 people on board, prompting an investigation into whether it was mechanical failure or a bomb. There were no immediate reports of the discovery of any debris in the area of sea between the Greek islands and the Egyptian coast where the plane vanished from radar screens. But French President Francois Hollande confirmed that the plane had “crashed” and the Paris prosecutor’s office said its accident department had opened an investigation. Egypt’s Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said he could not rule out either terrorism or a technical problem. “I don’t deny the hypothesis of a terrorist attack or something technical. It is too early,” he told a news conference, adding that no wreckage had been found. The Airbus A320 fell 22,000 feet and swerved sharply twice in Egyptian airspace before it disappeared from radar screens, Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos told a news conference. Egypt and Greece both said they had dispatched aircraft and naval vessels on a search mission and they were expected to be joined by French teams. Fifteen French citizens were among the 26 foreign passengers on the EgyptAir flight, who also included a Briton and a Canadian. Both France and Egypt have come under attack by jihadists of the Islamic State group in the past year and Hollande promised a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash as suspicions swiftly focused on a bomb. “We must ensure that we know everything on the causes of what happened. No hypothesis is ruled out or favoured,” he said in a televised address. “Whether it was an accident or another hypothesis that everyone has on their mind — a terrorist hypothesis… at this stage we must focus on our solidarity with the families and the search for the causes of the catastrophe.” IS has been waging a deadly insurgency against Egyptian security forces and last October claimed the bombing of a Russian airliner flying home holidaymakers from the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, which killed all 224 people on board.

The strike embarked upon by labour unions recorded partial success in Osogbo on Thursday as workers stayed away from government offices. Public schools and courts were also closed in compliance with the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress on the strike but private businesses did not join and there was the usual vehicular movement across the state. Some civil society groups stormed the popular Olaiya Junction in continuation of the protest against the fuel price hike which started on Wednesday. However, the NLC chairman in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi and other leaders of the union refused to turn up for the rally. Although the fuel protest was held at the junction but it was not as vibrant as it was the first day. The road was not blocked but some of the civil society groups including the Joint Action Front and the Non Academic Staff Union reinstated their commitment to the struggle against the new pump price of fuel. They asked President Muhammadu Buhari to review downward the price, saying the suffering of many Nigerians had increased because of this policy. The Convener of JAF, Mr. Alfred Adegoke, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent accused Osun State branch of NLC of betrayal. He said the refusal of the NLC leaders to come for the rally was tantamount to betrayal, while urging them to come back for the struggle. Efforts to find out why the NLC chairman and other leaders did not turn up for the protest were unsuccessful as calls put across to the chairman’s telephone did not connect. The chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Osun State wing, Mr. Wakeel Amudah, told our correspondent, that the union had directed all teachers to comply with the strike action. He said he was satisfied with the compliance level to the strike directive, saying members of the union would continue with the strike until they were directed otherwise by the national body. Also, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, led members of the union to Mayfair in Ile Ife where they continued with the fuel protest. Students and other unions joined the protest where the union leaders continued to condemn the new policy on fuel
