In this case, a 2000 Nissan Xterra (11 years from year of manufacture) with an average annual mileage of 15,000 km for economy cars and 10,000km for luxury cars (particularly in the US) should have racked up to 150,000 and 180,000 km. Anything short of that should arouse suspicion and should be investigated.

In my opinion, the ignorance of would be car buyers induces some car dealers to tamper with the mileage reading to boost sales and satisfy customers. It is the collective responsibility of buyers and sellers to encourage honesty and transparency in all business dealings. There should be a greater focus on the mechanical condition of the car and not the mileage.
