A former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said Nigeria cannot afford to bungle the general elections, slated for this month, saying the international community is watching the country. He said this on Sunday at a public enlightenment programme on electoral process, organised by the Organisation of Tadhamunul Muslimeen and The Muslim Congress, Ogun State chapter, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta. Obasanjo, who was represented by Chief Idowu Akanle, said there was the need for Nigerians to protect the integrity of the country with their votes, so that we could also be as countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, where there is order in governance. Obasanjo said the failure of the elections would bring the nation to ridicule in the face of the international community. He said, “The elections are crucial and the international community is watching us. We should not disappoint them by ensuring that the elections are free and fair. “This election is for progress and development of this great country and should be devoid of sentiments, like religion, ethnicity and nepotism. “This election should be a unity election for all of us.” The former president said all eyes would also be on the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigeria Police to ensure a free and fair elections, with no excuses on prompt arrival of materials and provision of adequate security where necessary. He said, “We must not make mistake of allowing the international community to make jest of us, as such, those we want to beg are the Independent National Electoral Commission, who had just told us here on how the process would go, to assure us that it shall be well. “You must be fully prepared. You must be up and doing. No excuses. You know all this terrain very well, there should be no delay and late arrival of voting materials. “A situation where somebody at Egua will be phoning at 11am that they are still expecting materials will be unacceptable. A situation where the Police will be telling us no fuel to move will be unacceptable.” http://continentalnewsng.com/politics/february-poll-international-community-watching-nigeria-says-obasanjo/ |

Nigerians woke up this morning to a provocative advert placed in major print newspapers across Nigeria by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state practically wishing death on General Muhammad Buhari (rtd), the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The advert which were placed on the front pages of Punch, the Guardian and several other national newspapers, titled “Nigerians Be Warned” started with a quote from the book of Deuteronomy in the bible talking about life and death. Fayose then listed three former Nigerian head of states from the Northwestern part of Nigeria, who have died tragically and the placed Buhari at the end with a question mark placed over his photograph. fayose-new-351x185 The advert followed several desperate efforts by operatives of President Jonathan to hang a prostrate cancer diagnosis on Buhari over the last few days. The group went as far as concocting a laboratory report claiming Buhari had been diagnosed with prostate cancer at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. The hospital later denied the existence of the laboratory report and its writer. Also, Buhari personally addressed a press conference yesterday and denied visiting ABUTH in the last five years. The General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Friday has said he does not trust politicians. Adeboye spoke in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, during a two-day interdenominational prayer. According to the cleric, politicians in most cases hardly fulfil their promises. Adeboye illustrated his claim with the story of three travellers – an Indian, a Jew and a politician. He said while the three men were travelling, they had a problem and went to a farmer for help, but the farmer said he could only accommodate two people. Adeboye said the Indian volunteered to sleep in the barn, but returned few minute later that there was a cow there. The Indian, according to the illustration, said he couldn’t sleep in the barn because cows were gods worshipped in his country. The Jew also came back complaining that pig was inside the barn and that the place was dirty. The politician also volunteered to sleep there, but instead of the politician to come back to complain, Adeboye said it was the pig and cow that came knocking that the politician should be sent away because he promised to make the environment, including the barn conducive with air-conditioner. The cleric said, “I don’t trust politicians. Politicians are liars. They don’t fulfil most of their promises. A politician can tell you that they will give all of you (students) chicken each, which we all know it is impossible.” The RCCG General Overseer, however, asked Nigerians to stop worrying themselves over who would emerge winner in the next general elections. According to him, God is a master planner who has already planned the leadership development of Nigeria. Adeboye said, “God has already planned who will be the President of Nigeria. God has already planned that before we were born. God is not like human beings who doubt what is to be done. He has plan for everything.” Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, hailed the cleric for his yearly presence in the university, saying the initiative was having positive impacts on the school. He said, “We appreciate the love of Pastor Adeboye. With God and his presence last year, we had no calamities and also emerged as the best university in Nigeria. I urge students to be prayerful and cautious of what they do as God will continue to protect us.” Source: http://www.saharanewsonline.com/?p=2509 |
