Intro: Ships from around the world detect a mysterious sea creature in 1866, which some believe to be a gigantic narwhal. In order to find and eliminate the monster, the United States government has formed an expedition. An invitation to join the expedition comes at the last minute from Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and the story's narrator, who accepts. The crew of the expedition finds the monster after a long search in the Pacific Ocean as it sails south around Cape Horn, but the ship is wrecked and the three major heroes are flung into the water when they assault it. Once arrested, they encounter Captain Nemo, an enigmatic figure. ~ Jules Verne's famous science fiction novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or Two Hundred Thousand Feet Under the Sea, was first published in 1870. The Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation, published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel, ran the novel in serial form from March 1869 to June 1870. Illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou were used for the illustrated edition published in November 1871 by Hetzel. To this day, it is considered one of the finest adventure novels ever written, among Verne's classics such as Around the World in Eighty Days, and Journey to the Center of Earth.
