I have not escaped poverty but I am taking steps towards getting there and these are my steps

1. My first major move was quitting my job to venture into business which initially I regretted cos of hunger but after 3yrs it began to make sense

2. Lifestyle changed helped me alot because I trimmed the friends I kept to just 5 reasonable guys that don't drink, womanize or go clubbing all the time. Our weekends we only hangout to brainstorm and another move was to get married when I started making some money. You won't understand how much being single cost until you get married to a responsible and decent lady then you realize how much you've wasted. I got married to a decent and hardworking lady who helped me to cut down excessive wastes and she helps me to budget and cut down cost alot, like moving from an overpriced house to a budget friendly house, removing peer pressures like throwing parties for child dedications etc, my wife stopped all that


3. Aggressive saving and investing. Nearly everything I earn now goes into MMF and Equities and every year we purchase a plot of land to add to the plots we already have. Our goal is for the MMF and Equities to be able to match up what my business generated, when we get to that level we can pat ourselves on the back and say well done.


4. I bought back my time by empowering my younger siblings. Seeing him roam the streets without ambition pisses me off so I strategically brought him to hustle with me and in the process taught him the business. He sees money now and runs the store for me. His presence now doubles my sales because I market and he also markets as well and every transaction gets him his cut. A substantial sum and this helps buy back my time because I delegate tasks to him while I have freedom to explore other investment opportunities. Aside that he now plays a major role in catering for our aged parents, a burden that was solely on me before.


5. I know what works for me and what doesnt work. Before now I spent alot trading cryptos which only causes me losses and miseries, so I realized since 2017 all have done was waste money without making even a penny. So realized that crypto will never make me rich hence I blocked and deleted everyone and anything crypto related and focused on my business. Also with almost everything I earn going into MMF, equities and real estate, I am only left with money to feed my family so no room to be a nice guy that I used to be. If you beg me for a loan, I can only give to you if I have anything In my opay. Aside that no money and I can't kill myself for you

I'm a young Nigerian from the South South part of Nigeria.

When people come online and say 500K cannot feed them in a week here on Nairaland and a Salary of 1 Million is too small to feed a family of four currently in Nigeria, I LAUGH MY STOMACH OUT. They don't know Nigeria are surviving in their own way.

If you know how much this traders and farmers earn you will be shocked, If you see some of their bank account you might run mad. My Aunty who is a Senior Civil Defense officer said when they were given sudden layoff from her Bank job many years ago, after they were paid off, She took her money to buy Civil Defense job, while her friend and colleague used her own money to start hoarding and warehousing business.

SHE SAID HER FRIEND CURRENTLY CAN PAY HER (AS A CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICER) HER 6 MONTH SALARY AND SHE WON'T EVEN NOTICE THAT SUCH AMOUNT LEFT HER BANK ACCOUNT

I know someone who used Chewing stick business to build his own personal house and another for rent, and have train his 3 graduates and the rest are still in school. I know a rice trader, Panel Beater, Welder, Carpenter etc who are living in their own personal house and training their children with money from their business.

People stick to where their pockets can manage. It’s why Lagos has the mainland and the island. The cost of living in both areas is completely different.

Yes, it makes sense for people to live within and even below their means. Don’t forget that our country people worship wealth and every show of it. It’s why people try to live above their means. Nobody wants to know how you achieved something, they only care for the final product.
