TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a British woman who tragically died trying to swim across the English Channel for charity. Susan Taylor, a 34-year-old accountant from Barwell, Leicestershire, got into ’serious difficulties’ in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world as she approached France on Sunday. Her paramedic brother David Wright was travelling in the support boat and battled in vain to save her. Since the news broke today, the balance on Susan's fundraising page rocketed to £17,000 by 4.30pm - and is still rising. Susan had raised around £2,000 by this morning so the extra money will come as a huge boost for her charities Diabetes UK and Rainbows Children's Hospice, Loughborough. Susan's dad Arthur Wright, 68, revealed today how David tried to save Susan when she got into difficulty. Her husband Stephen Taylor, a 43-year-old electrician, was also on the support boat. This morning her devastated sister posted on Susan's event page to break the heartbreaking news of her death. She wrote: "Whilst attempting to swim the English Channel yesterday my sister, Susan collapsed suddenly in the water. She was immediately recovered from the water and treated on the support boat. "She was then air lifted by helicopter to a hospital in Boulonge. Susan tragically passed away. "Thank you for your messages of support. Please respect the family's privacy whilst they come to terms with what has happened. If you would like to leave a sign of respect please feel free to donate to her fund raising page." Kevin Murphy, secretary of The Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation, said: “It is incredibly sad. People in our organisation knew her. http://www.aftatech.com/index.php?topic=166.msg188;topicseen#msg188 |

1. Use "I" and "You," but mostly "You." Forget what you've learned about writing a press release or a brochure and think of how you would write a letter to another individual. Using I and You provides human interest and is a powerful way to engage the reader. 2. Base your appeal on benefits, not needs. Donors give in order to get something in return, primarily the good feelings that come from helping others, or an opportunity to enjoy an experience. Intangible benefits are lives saved or human dignity restored. Tangible benefits could be tickets to a special performance of your ballet company or early admission to a special exhibit at your museum. Tell your prospective donor what he/she will get out of their donation, both tangible and intangible. 3. Ask for money, not for support. Be explicit when asking for money. Example: Send a special gift today of $25 or more. Be clear and repeat some variation of the message throughout the letter. Don't be shy and don't be vague. 4. Write a package, not a letter. The letter is the most important piece of your package, but it is only a part of a multi-piece unit that must all work together seamlessly. At the very least, your package will contain an outer envelope, a reply envelope, and a reply device, as well as the letter. Think about how each of these will help persuade donors to take action now. Use a unifying theme, symbols, colors and typefaces so the package is both memorable and accessible.
