Time, they say reveals a lot.

Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , who got the ticket after defeating a notable field of opponents at the PDP primaries in Abuja has come a long way in Nigerian politics.

Atiku was a Vice-President under the tenure of Olusegun Obasanjo. The tenure was not a smooth one as Obasanjo noted the betrayals and under hand dealings of Atiku which resulted in an almost open confrontation between the two.

As someone who worked in close proximity with Atiku, Obasanjo is perceived as knowing him more than the average Nigerian. Obasanjo had canvassed several times against an Atiku Presidency.

This brings us back to the matter of who should be president after the tenure of Mohammadu Buhari, a Northerner who has been in power since 2015. Although, Buhari and Atiku are of different political parties, the fact remains that ethnicity and zoning is still an important factor in Nigerian politics.

In all fairness and for equity, power should return back to the Southern part of the country. The present precarious state of the country has even made this more pertinent, as there is a feeling that the present Government has thrown the principle of National Character to the gutters. It is even more painful as the economy has seriously suffered with record unemployment statistics (over 33%) never seen in these climes. The country cannot afford to play games with its leadership, anymore!

Yesterday, at the Arewa Townhall Policy Dialogue in Kaduna, Atiku made a statement which revealed his inner thoughts. He is quoted as saying “Northerners need someone from north as President — not Yoruba, Igbo”. This was to an audience made up mostly of people of Hausa and Fulani Northern origin.

The message was clear and direct: As a Northerner, you should not vote for a Yoruba or Igbo candidate.

That can never the mantra of a Pan-Nigerian candidate. That is the slogan of an ethnic champion.

We know in politics, almost anything goes. However, this should not go. This is clearly a divisive statement and needs to be retracted. We can imagine the scenario; if the other candidates go to their regions and stoke up same ethnic sentiments.

That would be a recipe for chaos.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has come a long way in politics. Infact, politics has been the only thing he has done since graduating from law school.

Wike contested for and lost out in both the Presidential Primaries and Vice President selection process of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He lost out to Abubakar Atiku who subsequently did not pick him as his running mate for the 2023 Presidential Elections.

Nyesom Wike did not pick the form or contest for the upcoming Senatorial elections. He will lose his immunity when he steps down as Governor.

Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike has filed criminal charges against former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi over the alleged misuse of 96 billion Naira which accrued from the sales of state assets.

The decision to file the charges was taken after the Supreme Court dismissed an application by former Governor Amaechi, challenging the probe as advised by a commission of inquiry constituted by Governor Wike to look into the alleged sale of valuable assets such as Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel and the award of contract for the execution of Mono Rail Project.

Channels Television reported that while swearing in three new Commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Wike announced the decision of the leaders of the state to prosecute the former Governor and an energy firm, Sahara Energies indicted in the deals.

The firm is co-founded by a businessman, Tonye Cole who is now the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

Governor Wike also directed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Rivers State, Professor Zaccheaus Adangor to write a strong protest letter to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) to stop what he called an harassment of the immediate past Accountant General of the State, Siminialayi Fubara who is now the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State.

Governor of Ekiti State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, says he has a mandate to transform Nigeria, if he becomes president in 2023.

Fayemi said this on Thursday, May 19, when he addressed APC delegates in Kaduna to solicit their support and share his vision of a new and better Nigeria.

He said, if elected, he will hit the ground running, as he has already developed a blueprint to tackle the challenges of insecurity, economy and improve infrastructure.

The aspirant added that he will focus on uniting Nigerians, to ensure proper cohesion for the development of the country.

“What the country needs at the moment is better future for the younger generation; a more prosperous, secured Nigeria where leadership responds to the yearning of citizens,” Fayemi said.

The Ekiti state governor said if he emerges as the APC presidential candidate and wins the 2023 election, his administration will give significant attention to the recruitment of more security personnel.

“It’s not just about the equipment, security men. It’s not just about intelligence gathering, but the link between security and development.

“One of the triggers in our current security challenges is the inequality in our society, the poverty situation.

“Even if in the short term, we are able to bring banditry, insurgency and all criminality to an end, we need to find permanent solutions by addressing the economic reasons under pinning the security challenges,” he said.
