South Africa Knocks Nigeria off its Perch as “Most Corrupt” African Country South Africa is now believed to be the most corrupt country on the continent, according to a new survey. By Alexis Haden The latest report by Transparency International sees South Africa top the list of countries where citizens believe the problem has got worse in the last year. Over 80% of South Africans who were interviewed thought that corruption had increased over the last year. Ghana and Nigeria are some of the other worst- affected nations. 79% of South Africans surveyed also believe that not enough is being done to curb corruption. On the continent‚ the majority of Africans (58%) say that corruption has increased over the past year. If there is one shining light to the survey it’s that 56% of South Africans surveyed believe that ordinary people can make a difference in the fight against corruption. The survey found that 25% of respondents in SA believe that the most effective way for ordinary citizens to combat corruption is by reporting their experiences‚ followed by a further 22% who identified the refusal to pay bribes as an effective means to fight corruption. With 43‚143 respondents, across 28 countries surveyed, people feel the police, business executives, government officials and the courts were all perceived as corrupt, with 75 million people estimated to have paid a bribe in the past year, AFP reports. Between JZ pouring money into his Nkandla digs, Prasa’s dodgy trainsand countless of other scandals, South Africans aren’t exactly stoked about the state of affairs. “People are outraged, they see this huge spending as part of government corruption,” David Lewis, director of Corruption Watch, a local anti-graft organisation, told AFP. “Corruption creates and increases poverty and exclusion,” Transparency International head Jose Ugaz said in a statement. source: www.thesouthafrican.com/south-africa-knocks- nigeria-off-its-perch-as-most-corrupt-african- country/ |

RUSSIAN FAN SENDS UNITED FLAG INTO SPACE
“We’ll keep the red flag flying high” is a chant
often heard at Old Trafford, but it’s fair to
assume nobody has shown their colours on
higher ground than Alexey Yakovlev.
Amazingly, with a little help from NASA astronaut
Steve Swanson, the 36-year-old United fan from
Moscow, Russia, sent his own MUFC flag into
space for 169 days in 2014, when it orbited the
earth 2,704 times. As Alexey told ManUtd.com
ahead of Wednesday's match with CSKA Moscow,
his is an interesting tale.
“I have been supporting Manchester United for 15
years now, since the year 2000,” Alexey explained.
“It started in Kosovo, of all places, where I used
to be a peacekeeper and where I found a lot of
English friends who were also big Reds. They
convinced me to become a fan as well!
“But the idea about sending a flag to space only
came to me when I ordered it from a friend in
England. I realised I could do it because I’ve been
working as a translator at the Gagarin
Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia. That’s how
I made friends with Steve, who I do a lot of
translating for.
“Steve is American and is not a United fan but he
quickly agreed to take my flag up to the
International Space Station for me because he
had some extra space in his own luggage. They
are allowed to take 1.5kg up there and the flag
only weighs 85 grams, so it was an easy fit.
“I am very proud of what I did and I am proud of
the photo because United means a lot to me.
We’ve waved our flag up in space and I doubt
very much that anybody can take it higher than
that!” |

THERE are indications that the establishment of a new national carrier may become a reality soon with the submission of the report by a Federal Government committee with the mandate to work out modalities to restore the national airline.National CarrierSubmitting its report at the Ministry of Aviation, Chairman of the committee, Capt. Abdulsalami Mohammed, said that the committee had wide consultations and received a number of memoranda in the course of its sittings.According to him, “the creation of the committee on the establishment of a national carrier has generated a lot of excitement and comments both in the print and electronic media as well as in social media networks since its inauguration.“It was therefore not surprising that we received a lot of memoranda from interested stakeholders within and outside the country.“We consulted with a total of 74 stakeholders, ranging from airline operators to aviation agencies, service providers, financial consultants, institutional investors, aircrafts and parts suppliers and former staff of Nigeria Airways Limited.”Mohammed noted that the committee has given what he described as far reaching recommendations, which if accepted and implemented by the Federal Government will have positive impact on the aviation industry in Nigeria.Receiving the report, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation, Mrs. Binta Bello, explained that the inauguration of the committee was based on a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari, to advise government on appropriate modalities for the establishment of a national carrier. She declined to give a timeline within which the proposal will be implemented arguing that,“the report has just been submitted to me and I have not even opened it.“Until I open the report and see the recommendations, I cannot say exactly what we are going to come up with.”The committee was inaugurated in Abuja on August 25 and given four weeks to complete its assignment. The Federal Government had made several failed attempts in the past at floating a national carrier after the demise of the Nigeria Airways which was established earlier in 1971 following a buy-out of the equities of Elder-Dempster and British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).Reports indicate that for over 40 years, the airline served as link to various destinations not only in Nigeria but also across West and Central Africa and also operated intercontinental flights to Europe, USA, Middle East and Asia.According to an Aviation Consultant, Chris Aligbe, Federal Government’s Structural Adjustment Policy of Former President Ibrahim Babangida in the in the 1980s dealt the Nigeria Airways a devastating blow which may have eventually led to its grounding.According to Aligbe, “the Structural Adjustment Programme came with a huge devaluation of the Naira and stoppage of annual subvention to Nigeria Airways.“This twin policy action quadrupled Nigeria Airways problems as it multiplied the airline’s debt in terms of the quantum of it required to meet its foreign debt obligations which at the IATA Clearing House stood at US$42 million, among others.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/fg-begins-revival-of-national-carrier/ |
With half an hour still to play, United rang the
changes but should have added a fifth when
Clayton Blackmore pounced on a slip by
Westerveld but arrowed his shot narrowly wide of
an open goal from distance.
As the game became increasingly fractious, Ian
Rush came on to add more potency to Liverpool's
attack and they clawed one back when Garcia's
volley picked out Thompson racing in at the far
post to slam into the net.
Both sides managed to keep their cool despite
some tired legs and late tackles as the match
lived up to expectations and it will have raised
vital funds for both clubs' Foundations.
United: Van der Gouw (Pilkington 69); Martin,
Johnsen, Robson (Beardsmore 69), Irwin (Thomas
82); Gillespie, Poborsky, Fortune, Djordjic (Yorke
84), Blomqvist (Thornley 61); Yorke (Blackmore
61, Blomqvist 76).
Liverpool: Dudek (Westerveld 46); Kvarme
(McAteer 87), Henchoz (Diao 46), Babb; McAteer
(Partridge 65), Garcia, Hamann, Berger, Harkness
(Thompson 46); Smicer (Rush 70), Fowler. |
United Legends 4 Liverpool Legends 2
Manchester United's Legends overcame their
Liverpool rivals 4-2 in Stockholm despite falling
behind to a Vladimir Smicer goal. Karel
Poborsky, Dwight Yorke, Bojan Djordjic and
Jesper Blomqvist hit back to hand Bryan
Robson's team a resounding lead with David
Thompson replying late on.
An open game from the outset thrilled the crowd
at the Friends Arena with Patrik Berger twice
close to drawing first blood with long-range
strikes. The Merseysiders did break through when,
after Yorke spurned an opening, a punch by
Raimond van der Gouw was returned with interest
by Smicer, who nodded into an empty net.
It took United only four minutes to respond, with
Poborsky accepting a return pass by Keith
Gillespie and dinking over Jerzy Dudek from an
angle for an exquisite goal.
The woodwork denied Robbie Fowler following a
delightful through ball by Luis Garcia before Yorke
fired United ahead, capping a neat move involving
Djordjic's pass and Lee Martin ducking under the
ball to leave it to the striker.
While Jason McAteer should have been booked
long before getting yellow carded for a foul on
Blomqvist, Fowler felt he should have had a
penalty after being up-ended by Denis Irwin just
before the break.
The Reds' best spell came at the start of the
second half with Irwin's free-kick forcing a
brilliant save out of Sander Westerveld. The
keeper blotted his copybook by misdirecting a
throw to Djordjic and he accepted the gift to
embroider his quality performance with the goal it
deserved.
After van der Gouw stood firm under some
pressure, Yorke had a goal harshly ruled out for
offside after more sloppy defending but it
mattered little when Blomqvist sprung the offside
trap to race after Yorke's pass and he danced
around Westerveld before fizzing the ball home. |

TIMAYA Call him the boy from Bayelsa State, and you may not be wrong. The former plantain seller started out as an inspirational singer. But along the line, he drifted and that was when he started gaining recognition within and beyond the shores of the country. He started releasing songs that many termed as being “repetitive and monotonous to gain popularity. Timaya once confessed that he started his career writing inspirational songs. But it didn’t get him the much needed fame and fortune. It was when he began singing songs without writing down lyrics, but just basically ‘free-styling’ that the music began to pay. Before now, he has been criticized for songs such as ‘Ukwu,’ ‘Bum Bum,’ and ‘Malonogede.’ But he doesn’t seem to care as he keeps smiling to the bank. TERRY G Another singer that changed the beat is Terry G. His 2009 song, ‘Free Madness’ revolutionized the Nigerian music scene in its own way. It was the era of glorification of beats over lyrics. That song was nothing more than a compilation of mumbo- jumbo on a beat that was both danceable and infectious. Even though many criticized the meaningless lyrics, yet it was played at every nook and crannies of the society; hot spot, and nightclubs. Terry G also inspired a new generation of artistes who believed that there is no need for their songs to have lyrical content in order to break even in the industry. For them, all they needed was a ‘banging’ beat that could get music lovers to dance away their sorrows. Meanwhile Terry G didn’t begin that from the onset. He used to be a chorister in church, who exhibited exceptional skills in playing musical instruments to propagate God’s work. Nigerians won’t forget in a hurry how Terry G negatively influenced the young ones with his love for marijuana in his songs. But whether we like it or not, his gamble paid off, as he made a lot of money and hits from his ‘Free Madness’ even though his brand was badly affected. The talented singer and beat-maker confessed in a recent interview that his past is still haunting him as he wasn’t getting corporate endorsements like many of his colleagues. IYANYA For those who followed the MTN Project Fame West Africa season 1 in 2008, it was evident from the onset that the eventual winner, Iyanya was incredibly talented. But his career almost fizzled out like a fake perfume which was exposed to the sun. His first album after winning the competition, ‘My Story’ containing songs like ‘Love Truly,’ ‘No Time’ amongst others was a commercial failure. It was after the body-building Cross River-born singer teamed up with producer, D’Tunes that people began to pay serious attention to his music. He shed his good boy image and stopped promoting his sonorous voice as his selling point. He started showing off his biceps and singing about sex, and boom, the megabucks started rolling in for him. Till date, he remains one of the most successful winners of the competition. SKALES We all knew Skales as a rapper in the early stage of his career. As a matter of fact, he was signed on to Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) because of his lyrical prowess. However, the young dude got confused along the line, or as some would argue, he got ‘intimidated’ by his label mate, Wizkid who was making all the money and getting all the girls by virtue of his vocal dexterity. We were all surprised when the ‘homeboy’ changed the beat and started singing something different. However, after releasing songs like ‘Mukulu,’ ‘Shake Body,’ ‘Je kan Mo’ and ‘I am for Real,’ Skales became more of a singer than a rapper. PRAIZ Praise Ugbede Adejo popularly known as Praiz is undeniably vocally gifted. He emerged the second runner up in the 2008 edition of the MTN Project Fame, but just like the winner, Iyanya, he didn’t immediately find his footing in the music industry. His brand of music didn’t connect well with the the local audience, but nowadays, he has ‘diluted’ his style, and it has translated into gains for him. His songs like ‘Oshe’ featuring Awilo, and ‘Sisi’ featuring Wizkid have been club bangers in their own rights, but they’re definitely not the old Praiz style that we used to know. SEAN TIZZLE Not many people know that Sean Tizzle started his music career as a rapper, but the Difference Entertainment Act once revealed that he used to be a lyricist. In his days as a rapper, he wasn’t known and he never caught a break. However, the desire to be more commercially relevant must have pushed him to hone his vocal skills, and the rest as they say is history. His songs like ‘Sho Le,’ Mama Eh’ and ‘Kilogbe,’ have all topped the charts at different times. SAINT JANET Call her the Queen of Nigerian lewd singers, and you’d be correct. Saint Janet shocked the sensibilities of many Nigerians with the release of her live performance CD which contained many obscene lyrics and sexually explicit content in 2009. It was so bad that the Lagos State government had to ban it from playing in public places, but Saint Janet argued that the move by government even made her more popular, as the same officials that banned her song in public, also invited her to perform at their private functions. However, Saint Janet has her roots in the church as she used to be a chorister, but she didn’t attract public attention and commercial success until she went wild. And now that she has tasted fame and fortune, albeit in a controversial way, Saint Janet doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to change her style of music anytime soon. In a recent interview, she asserted that even her husband can no longer stop her from singing lewd songs as it is her claim to fame. |

The Nigerian Air force has unveiled unmanned bomb detector and a Light Surveillance Aircraft developed by the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, north-west Nigeria. The development is part of the force’s contribution to the fight against insurgency in the troubled north-eastern region. Commandant of the AFIT, Air Vice Marshal Toni Adokwe, introduced the device at a gathering ahead of the institute’s 44th Convocation Ceremony coming up on Friday. The Commandant demonstrated how the device could dictate and pick up Impoverished Explosive Device to safer locations for disposal. The device has a frequency jammer to distort GSM signals and also has a time run of four hours. He said it was produced by students of the Armament Engineering Department in 2012 and was later modified to a higher level called Unmanned Ground Vehicle type two. Adokwe affirmed that with effective innovative approach to technology, Nigeria would be able to tackle the current security challenge in the North-east. He emphasised that the growing wave of bombings by the Boko Haram sect required more researches and innovations of modern equipment and technologies to tackle the challenge. The Commandant further explained that the institute had equally commenced research into the development of a Light Surveillance Aircraft that would be in conformity with the climatic temperature of Nigeria and the West African sub-region. Since inception, the AFIT has graduated about 5,000 persons, including personnel of the Nigerian Army, Air force, Navy and civilians, as well as foreign students from the Armed Forces of the Republic of Benin, Zimbabwe, Niger, Ghana and Sierra Leone. It is structured into three schools which are the School of Air Engineering, School of Ground Engineering and Management Studies, as well as the School of Postgraduate Studies, which coordinates the various postgraduate programmes in the other schools. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/07/28/air-force-modifies-unmanned-bomb-detector/unmanned-bomb-detector/
