WARRI—TWO lecturers at Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Professor Christopher Orubu and Dr. Emmanuel Biri, have condemned the demonization of Urhobo culture under the facade of Christianity. Chief Enyote Gbogbo (in traditional attire) and Dr. Emmanuel Biri (DELSU) flanked by Epha Ughievwen, during the maiden Ughievwen Cultural Carnival led by Chief Gbogbo in Otughievwen, headquarters of Ughelli South Local Government. Both lecturers, speaking at the first Ughievwen Cultural Carnival, staged at Otughievwen, headquarters of Ughelli South Local Government Area, said the trend was robbing Urhobo nation and Ughievwen Urhobo in particular, economic oppor-tunities to sell its culture and heritage to the outside world. Professor Orubu stated that as a people, Ughievwen of Urhobo evolved with peculiar cultural practices and heritage giving its sons and daughters a self- identity that cannot be sustained by any borrowed culture. He said: ”Our four pivots of chieftaincy, Adeh, Eboh, Igbun-Otor and Igbun-Eshovwin, which have been handed down from generations have exclusive entertainment carriages in various festivals, which were the envy of non-natives, who throng the community from far and near to share in the fun. Demonization of culture “Today, in the name of Christianity, these attractions are fast fading away. We demonize our culture on the notion that they are fetish, but even the Pope has entered shrines, not of Christians, and acknowledged the sense of faith in God by adherents of the deities worshipped in such shrines.” In a separate lecture onThe Past, Present and Future of the Ughievwen People, Dr. Biri of the Department of Mass Communication, DELSU, said that some of the core cultural values of Ughievwen Urhobo, being so demeaned in the land, were being celebrated with growing global recognition in other climes. Biri asserted: “TheEpha(celebration of bare breast maidens), which is Urhobo’s appreciation of the purity in women, is gradually going into extinction on the notion that it is fetish and obscene. “But in Swaziland, the same heritage has become an annual tourist attraction visited by several people from around the world. “In Ughievwen, ancestral worship has also been condemned as demonic and fetish whereas in Japan, the second largest economy in the world, ancestral veneration remains a valued culture. “Japanese, including the most highly placed, go to venerate the graves of their dead parents, decorating them with flowers.” Why we organized carnival Chief Enyote Gbogbo, who headed the team of organizers of the event, toldNiger Delta Voice: “The pains expressed by the DELSU scholars underpin the motivation for originating the Ughievwen Cultural Carnival. Gbogbo said: “We noticed Ughievwen will have no sense of identity as a people if our cultural values are being rubbished and discarded, no matter the excuses. “To revive the dying culture, we have decided to bring the various cultural celebrations into one big annual carnival.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/delsu-dons-christians-stop-demonizing-urhobo-culture/

Didi Ekanem is fast gaining popularity for her bum than for her acting talent. And the actress who recently starred in Uduak Oguamanam’s Jump and Pass isn’t too pleased about that. She recently revealed this in an interview with Showtime Celebrity. Didi Ekanem In her words:” As much as I love it so much, I just wish people would focus more on my talent than my bum. All the concentration out there is on my bum not my talent. I would honestly wish people to see me as a talented actress not a sexy one. But my bum is not allowing people to see me deep down, to see the person and the talent”. When asked by one of our reporters the craziest thing a fan has ever done to her , she boldly replied :”Craziest thing? A mad man actually grabbed my bum in public while I was walking on the road. That’s like the craziest thing, what else can possibly be crazier than that? I was just passing, I wanted to get something and next thing, he just walked up to me and grabbed my bum from behind. When I turned, he was still holding it like a mad man and I screamed, I ran, left my shoes and everything. People just stood there and they were just laughing”

He has shown loyalty, he has shown his commitment, he has shown his dedication to our party, our programmes, our policies and to the president who is the leader of the party, he has been campaigning and he has shown complete loyalty to Mr President. So we are happy, we believe he remains a father figure in our party and we admire that in him. Just few days ago the members of the party like Asari Dokubo, Tompolo, said there will be no peace in Nigeria if Jonathan loses February 14 election. We didn’t hear the party condemn that statement. Is the party in agreement with that statement? Well, we have noted that whilst we are not responsible for the utterances, statements of some of our support individuals, groups and organizations, we are cautioning them to be mindful of what they are saying. Ours is a national party. We cover all zones, all local governments. No individual owns our party, no group, no people, no zone owns our party. And being a national party, we caution some of our people, some of our supporters to be mindful of the zeal that they exhibit. Let the wrong impression not be given. So if the president loses this election…(cuts in) We do not entertain losing the election. We will not lose this election because we have done well. We will not lose this election because our party is loved by the people. We won’t lose this election because we have achieved. Propaganda and allegations We won’t lose this election because the opposition and its leaders in spite of their false promises, propaganda and allegations, have shown that they are not an option at all, an alternative to what we have on ground, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan. General Theophilus Danjuma said that Tompolo and the rest should be arrested. Do you agree with him? We have ended our statement with cautioning some of our supporters to be mindful of what they have done. We ended it with that. We are not a law enforcement agency and we will not delve into such controversial issues. We do not believe that such will be repeated by such individuals. Danjuma is your member, are you cautioning him to be mindful of his statements too? No, we are talking about the people that issued the statement. He mentioned the people that should be arrested. My reaction to those people is what I said, not my reaction to what Danjuma said. I made a reaction to the people that he said should be cautioned.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/not-entertaining-losing-election-metuh-pdp-spokesman/ |
As one who travelled with the PDP team in the on going campaign train to the states, what is your reaction to the way and manner President Goodluck Jonathan was attacked in some Northern States? The truth is that in all the campaigns we have been especially in the north, we have seen widespread reception for the president. The people have shown that they are happy with the president’s performance and his visit to these states. You will not rule out that in every society there are the miscreants. So the opportunity of one or two individuals or a few individuals to make headlines or to create diversion is not worrisome. It is a wrong thing for anybody to feel that the president has not been treated well in these states. We debunk it and we say it is not true. The people of the states have received the president very well and they are happy with their performance and the people showed it by coming out enmasse, welcoming, dancing and singing. And you noticed that in this campaign, the people of Nigeria have changed the whole idea and the motto of our campaign to, “Nigeria sai Goodluck”. In the north that was the chant. ‘’Nigeria, sai Goodluck.” If you say Nigeria, they will say Goodluck. And they have said and they keep on emphasizing it forward Nigeria, forward Nigeria. This government is about moving Nigeria forward and the people are happy with him. Even in Bayelsa or Cross River, you can still have any mad man, one or two people that are insane to throw stones at our convoy. It doesn’t mean that the people of Cross River, or Akwa Ibom have treated the president badly. You cannot judge with a miscreant or trouble maker, an isolated case and say that we have not been fairly well treated. I want to say that we have been received very well across the country and we are happy with the treatment we have gotten. Then, how do you react to the claim by Governor Yuguda that the minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed who is a member of your party sponsored the stoning of the president’s convoy in Bauchi? You know we have a constitution and we are guided by a constitution. It is curious; it is not a very welcomed development if we have leaders of our party bickering in public. I will refrain from making any comment on it, but we have already directed our members accordingly to be mindful of publicising internal party dispute. PDP has just lifted the suspension on Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. What informed that decision? What informed that decision beside the facts that suspensions are for specific periods for the 30 days in the first instance which was not renewed, in spite of that we have to make it public, as a mark of honour to the former chairman, where he has displayed undue restraint, respect for constituted authority. |

I graduated into Trans- border robbery In his desperation to eke a living, he returned back to Nigeria last year, where he reportedly met members of another robbery gang. He confessed that he went on operation twice with the new gang but only got between N20,000 and N50,000 , an amount he said was not enough to meet his needs. Continuing, he said : “During one of our meetings, I told my members that we should step up by going to operate in Benin Republic, since their Police were not as effective as ours. The first operation was in a filling station in Benin Republic. It took me two days to survey the place before I invited members of the gang. At the end of the operation, we lodged in a hotel there for two days, shared the loot before others left, while I stayed back. Three weeks later, as I was driving around Porto Novo, I saw a micro-finance bank. I studied the terrain that day and came back the next day to continue. I observed that policemen were not stationed there and that only unarmed private guards were there. Quickly, I came to Nigeria to inform my members and left back for Benin Republic. Three days later, we struck at the bank and made away with N100 million equivalent. During operation, we don’t use our real names. For instance, my operational name is Ishola. We have names like Mensah, Koffi, Messiah, master, etc. This is to give our victims the impression that we were from Benin Republic. Premonition “ Joining a robbery gang is the worst mistake of my life. Had I known, I would have listened to my wife. Three days before I was nabbed, she told me she dreamed that I was arrested alongside other people for robbery and that I was killed in the process. Since then, she has been fasting and praying against sudden death. But I assured her all was well and that I was not into any dirty deal. If I had known I would have returned to Benin Republic , instead of remaining here in Nigeria.” I lost everything Another suspected member of the gang, Ifeanacho Igwe (35), told Crime Guard that he was forced into robbery by one Nnamdi, whom he said invited him over after he requested financial assistance from him. The invitation according to Igwe, turned out to be his worst nightmare. According to him: “ As a commercial motorcyclist, Nnamdi invited me to take him to a location, promising to give me some money I earlier requested for. That was in 2011 But on reaching the location at Alakija bus-stop, it turned out to be a robbery operation scene. I couldn’t turn back because it was late and I was afraid they could kill me. I had no option than to play along. They succeeded in collecting N85 million from a victim and at the end I got N25 million. Since then, I cut off totally from them. I lost everything I used that money on; I bought a new truck for N14 million and a commercial bus , including a sports utility vehicle for my personal use. I used the rest to renovate my mother’s house and support my siblings’ education. Since that robbery operation my entire life has gone from bad to worse. I gave the truck out to a driver to use for transportation purpose. While on a business trip to the eastern part of the country, it rammed over someone before it somersaulted into a river, with goods worth several millions of naira. As if that was not enough, I am in the police net for a crime committed four years ago. My past sins have caught up with me,” he stated in an emotion- laden voice.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/confessed-pastor-every-robbery-operation/

29-year David Chineye was among eight suspected members of a trans-border robbery gang arrested by the Lagos State Police Command last week. The Imo State-born suspect who claimed to be married to a Benin Republic-based Togolese, gave a startling confession on the gang’s operation in Benin and Mali, during an exclusive interview with Crime Guard. Chineye who admitted to be the gang’s informant, revealed that his union with his wife, made it easy for him to study the terrain in Cotonou, Benin Republic, thereby facilitating the gang’s entry into the country. Members of his gang reportedly stormed a micro finance bank in Porto Novo, Benin Republic, last November, from where they carted away the equivalent of N100 million. Chineye who gave his operational name as Ishola, said he masterminded the robbery operation at the financial institute, adding that it took him two days to study the terrain before inviting other members of the gang over. He further told Crime Guard that the gang was planning to extend its operations to Togo when they were arrested. I go for confession after each operation The father of one who was full of remorse said that his pastor and members of his church, whose name he gave as Christ Ascension Church, Benin Republic branch, would be shocked beyond imagination when news of his arrest reach them. According to him: “ I am a dedicated church worker. Nobody knew I was an armed robber. Every time I returned from any operation, my conscience would prick me. Thereafter, I would go to church for confession but would never disclose the exact sin I committed. My wife didn’t know I was a robber either. This is because I stay in Benin Republic where she is permanently based for two months, before returning to Nigeria, where she believed I was working. I usually visited Benin Republic when we wanted to rob and would leave after investing my loot. This is to allow me get hints on the outcome of the operation, in terms of Police investigation.” Frustration led me into robbery At a point, he burst into tears, begging for his wife’s forgiveness when she hears about his involvement in crime. He stated that he never envisaged to go into robbery but that frustration forced him into it. “It all started after my apprenticeship in a pharmaceutical store, back in Owerri, the Imo state capital. My master refused to pay me off. Rather, he claimed that the money he ought to have settled me with was spent on the treatment of my ailing brother few months back. I left in anger and worked as a bus conductor until the engine of the bus got knocked. I was idle for some months, during which I met my wife who was visiting Nigeria for the first time. I went to Benin Republic with her, where I met some friends who introduced me into robbery. I started by breaking into peoples’ apartments, but it was not lucrative because at times, I won’t get anything from the houses”. |
