The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday postponed oral arguments scheduled for April as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and is considering alternative options for handling the various outstanding cases. The court, which already had delayed cases due to be argued in March, has yet to say how it will proceed. The court’s current term is due to conclude at the end of June. Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said that the nine justices – including oldest member Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87 – are all healthy. The court is due to issue rulings online only on Monday, as it has in the last two weeks. Among the April cases to be delayed is a dispute over the complex U.S. presidential election system focusing on whether Electoral College electors are free to break their pledges to back the candidate who wins their state’s popular vote. The court on March 16 announced it would postpone indefinitely the March round of oral arguments, including a high-profile dispute over whether President Donald Trump’s tax and financial records can remain secret. If cases cannot be heard in the courtroom before June because of health reasons the court would consider “other alternatives” to resolving them, Arberg said, without giving specifics. Other courts have held oral arguments by teleconference. The court could also choose to decide cases without hearing oral arguments. The virus has proven to be particularly dangerous to the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions. Six of the nine justices are 65 or older, including three over 70: liberals Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer (81) and conservative Clarence Thomas (71). Ginsburg has experienced a series of recent health issues, including treatment in the past two years for pancreatic and lung cancer. http://busynaija.com.ng/2020/04/05/supreme-court-postpones-april-oral-arguments-over-coronavirus/ |

David Mark, Benue State senator and two-time former Senate President, says he would do “many things differently” if voted as President in 2019 such that even the groundnut seller on the streets would feel his impact. Mark, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said this while soliciting votes in Lokoja, capital of Kogi State, on Tuesday. He also promised to turn around the economy of the country within two years of his presidency. “A lot of research has been done on the economy and if given the chance, I would bring them to bear and turn around things. “I will do so many things differently. When we put our processes in, the woman who is selling groundnuts by the roadside will feel the impact. “It is not by mere statistics or indices that we churn out. We want the ordinary people on the streets to feel the impact of the economy on their lives. We have young men and women who are neck dip into research and understand the economy of this country. “I think the core north should support us because we also have supported the core north. It is a give-and-take thing and we are talking about Nigeria. We are not talking about a section of this country. If I don’t have a national support, to be honest with you, I would not want to be President of this country. “I want to be President of a united and indivisible country called Nigeria. Call it core north, core south or core whatever, wherever they are, let them support me because we have supported them too.” On consensus candidate, the former Senate President said that would be left for the aspirants and the party to decide. “Whatever we do, the most important thing is that whoever emerges should emerge through a process that is fair, transparent and credible; whether it is by consensus or by primaries,” he said. http://www.busynaija.com.ng/2018/09/david-mark-if-i-become-president-the-roadside-groundnut-seller-will-feel-the-impact/

Google wants pictures of bicycles and birds that can defeat image-recognition algorithms, as part of a contest launched to improve the technology. While it is easy for humans to tell the difference between birds and bikes, computer systems can struggle to do so. Prize money will be awarded for pictures that can fool image-recognition algorithms, or for new code that cannot be easily fooled. But pictures of birds riding bicycles will not be allowed in the contest. Google said it hoped the competition would lead to systems that make fewer errors. How will the contest work? People entering the contest as an “attacker”, attempting to fool the system, must create an image of a bird that image-recognition algorithms think is a bicycle – or they can create an image of a bike that is misidentified as a bird. The image can be digital art, a 3D rendering or a photograph. But the image must be easily identified by a human as either a bird or a bike. Ambiguous images, such as a bird riding a bike, are not allowed. People can also enter the contest as a “defender” by writing code that does not fall for any of the attackers’ images. If the algorithm misidentifies any of the images submitted by attackers, it is deemed “broken” and eliminated from the competition. The first algorithm to remain unbroken for 90 days wins a quarter of the total prize fund – although Google says it has not yet decided how much that will be. How can you fool image-recognition software? Image-recognition software can be tricked by “adversarial noise” that tricks the computer into seeing something that is not there. In January, Google revealed a psychedelic pattern that could be printed out and placed in any scene to make a computer think it was looking at a toaster. Hiding a complex pattern in a bird’s plumage is one method that might fool an image-recognition system into thinking it was looking at a bike. “The objective of this contest is for defenders to build models that will never make confident mistakes,” Google said in its announcement. It said the contest would continue for several months until the prize money was claimed, rather than having a fixed end date. http://www.busynaija.com.ng/2018/09/google-bans-birds-on-bikes-from-algorithm-contest/

South African movie industry is mourning an award-winning filmmaker Carlos Carvalho, who died after he was head-butted by a giraffe. Forty-seven-year-old Carvalho, was at the Glen Africa Country Lodge in South Africa on Wednesday shooting a series about a British family in a game lodge when he attempted to get a close-up shot of Gerald, the giraffe. Tragedy however, struck while he was trying to get his shot, as Gerald (the giraffe) head-butted him and sent him 16 feet in the air. The filmmaker suffered massive head injuries as a result and was subsequently airlifted to Johannesburg’s Milpark Hospital where he died. Carvalho’s film crew agency, CallaCrew, announced the filmmaker’s death on its Facebook page. “It is with a very sad heart that we have to announce the passing of Carlos Carvalho‚ one of our favorite DOP’s. “Carlos was filming a feature at Glen Afric and had a fatal run-in with a giraffe on set. “He was flown to Milpark Hospital but succumbed to his injuries 20:50 last night. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Carlo’s family and friends during this very sad time. Michigan State University agreed to pay $500 million to settle claims from more than 300 women and girls who said they were assaulted by sports doctor Larry Nassar in the worst sex-abuse case in sports history, officials announced today. The deal surpasses the $100 million-plus paid by Penn State University to settle claims by at least 35 people who accused assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse, though the Nassar deal involves far more victims. ”We are truly sorry to all the survivors and their families for what they have been through, and we admire the courage it has taken to tell their stories,” said Brian Breslin, chairman of Michigan State’s governing board. ”We recognize the need for change on our campus and in our community around sexual assault awareness and prevention.” It’s not clear how much each victim will receive, although the money will not be divided equally. It’s also unclear where the money will come from. University spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said school leaders now will work on a way to pay the bill. Rachael Denhollander of Louisville, Kentucky, who in 2016 was the first woman to publicly identify herself as a victim, said the agreement ”reflects the incredible damage which took place on MSU’s campus.” But she said she still has not seen any ”meaningful reform” at the university. Nassar treated campus athletes and scores of young gymnasts at his Michigan State office, building an international reputation while working at the same time for USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. The university and lawyers for 332 victims announced the deal after negotiating privately with the help of a mediator. Under the agreement, $425 million would be paid to current claimants and $75 million would be set aside for any future claims. Lawyers will also be compensated out of the $500 million pool. Michigan State was accused of ignoring or dismissing complaints about Nassar, some as far back as the 1990s. The school had insisted that no one covered up assaults, although Nassar’s boss, former medical school dean William Strampel, was later charged with failing to properly supervise him and committing his own sexual misconduct. The boy happily rides on the snake These are the really shocking photos showing a three-year-old boy riding a giant 20ft python during floods in Vietnam. According to The Sun UK, the really enormous snake had been kept as a pet at the family’s home, but was let free to play in the ankle-deep floodwaters. The youngster, named Truong, could not contain his excitement as his careless parents took the chance to let the snake play in their flooded yard in Ha Trung district. Doan immediately leapt onto the deadly creature and straddled its back to begin riding it - and even giggled as he "giddies up" like a horse on the 180lb beast. Pictures of the incident went viral with many claiming they were edited - but the lad’s family replied with a video proving it was real. The boy’s aunty, An Nguyen, said: "He is three years old and the python is 80kg. The family have had the python for four years as a pet and it is very gentle. "It was a rainy day and the water flooded to the edge of the yard. So they put the python in there to play and relax." The floods lashing Vietnam this week are the worst in the country’s history with at least 54 dead and dozens more missing. The heavy rain in the central and northern regions has disrupted travel in some areas, limiting the rescue attempts for the missing. Hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings have been destroyed, while vast amounts of live stock have also been killed. https://zayndotme./2017/10/14/unbelievable-3-year-old-boy-caught-riding-a-massive-20-ft-python-in-the-water-during-floods/

Dutch icon Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international football on the same night he scored a brace against Sweden. Robben scored both goals as Holland won on Tuesday night but failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup, given they needed to beat the Swedes by seven goals to leap-frog them and secure a place in the play-offs. The flamboyant winger was pictured close to tears before and after the Group A World Cup qualifier at the Amsterdam Arena. South Africa's Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has hit out at brawling, chair-throwing ANC politicians, describing their behaviour as shameful. He made the remarks at the close of an African National Congress meeting in Eastern Cape province that descended into chaos. "I saw chairs flying - a festival of chairs... It's something we must be deeply ashamed about," he said. The ANC is to chose a new leader in December, inflaming party tensions. Mr Ramaphosa is one of the front-runners to replace President Jacob Zuma. Analysts say the eventual election of Oscar Mabuyane on Sunday as the ANC's East Cape provincial chairman is a boost for Mr Ramaphosa's leadership bid. At least eight people were injured in the violence that erupted at a conference centre in East London in the early hours of Sunday morning. Read more:https:/zayndotme.wordpess.com/2017/10/02/653
