Disgraced comic actor, Bill Cosby has been denied an early release from prison despite dozens of Coronavirus infections inside the facility where he is housed. The 82-year-old is serving a three to 10 years sentence at SCI Phoenix in Skippack, Pennsylvania after being found guilty of aggravated sexual assault in 2018. As a result of the pandemic, several prisoners across the world have been released early or sent to home confinement. Last Friday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf revealed a plan to ‘temporarily relieve’ at-risk inmates in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus behind bars, sparking speculation that Cosby could be freed. But the state’s Department of Corrections have ruled out an early release for the actor. ‘Sex offenders are not eligible under the reprieve criteria,’ a department spokesperson bluntly told the media. The star’s rep, Andrew Wyatt has hit back, claiming that it is dangerous to keep Cosby because of his poor health and old age. ‘All elderly inmates like Mr. Cosby could succumb to this virus. It seems it’s more politically motivated and personally motivated to not let this man out. It’s very upsetting and disappointing, ‘ Wyatt told Fox News. At the DCI Phoenix, Twenty-one prisoners and 13 staffers at the facility have tested positive for Coronavirus. Earlier this month, one inmate died from the virus inside the prison. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation says northern Nigeria remains a high-risk region for the spread of COVID-19 due to its weak primary healthcare system. Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Mark Suzman, said this during a conference call with select African journalists. Responding to a question on how the pandemic could affect northern Nigeria, Suzman said, “We have worked extensively in the North because it is the poorest part of Nigeria. It does have sort of the weakest overall health infrastructure and facilities and that is also why the region has the highest child and maternal mortality rate. “Those characteristics are shared by several African countries, including in the region that is comparable to the challenges in the other parts of the Sahel and other parts of the continent. “I don’t think there is anything sort of specific you call out other than the risks are obviously greater when you do have a very weak, underlying primary healthcare structure and system in place.” READ MORE ; https://busynaija.com.ng/2020/04/17/covid-19-northern-nigeria-remains-high-risk-says-gates-foundation/ |

The IMF described the global decline as the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It said the pandemic had plunged the world into a “crisis like no other”. The Fund added that a prolonged outbreak would test the ability of governments and central banks to control the crisis. Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s chief economist, said the crisis could knock $9 trillion (£7.2 trillion) off global GDP over the next two years. ‘Great Lockdown’ While the Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook praised the “swift and sizeable” response in countries like the UK, Germany, Japan and the US, it said no country would escape the downturn. It expects global growth to rebound to 5.8% next year if the pandemic fades in the second half of 2020. Ms Gopinath said today’s “Great Lockdown” presented a “grim reality” for policymakers, who faced “severe uncertainty about the duration and intensity of the shock”. “A partial recovery is projected for 2021,” said Ms Gopinath. “But the level of GDP will remain below the pre-virus trend, with considerable uncertainty about the strength of the rebound. “Much worse growth outcomes are possible and maybe even likely.” Sharpest UK downturn in a century The IMF predicts the UK economy will shrink by 6.5% in 2020, compared with the IMF’s January forecast for 1.4% GDP growth. A decline of this magnitude would be bigger than the 4.2% drop in output seen in the wake of the financial crisis. It would also represent the biggest annual fall since 1921, according to reconstructed Bank of England data dating back to the 18th century. However, this is half the annual rate expected by the OBR, which expects GDP to drop by 35% in the three months to June. The UK’s furlough scheme, which is designed to keep workers in a job amid the government lockdown, is expected to limit the rise in unemployment to 4.8% in 2020, from 3.8% last year. UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged billions of pounds in wage subsidies and loan guarantees to help workers and businesses through the shutdown. The Bank of England has also slashed interest rates to a new low and freed up billions of pounds for commercial banks to lend. Nigerian Singer Brymo is currently trending on social media and it is due to the spate of tweets he sent during an exchange he had with some non-fans who tried to talk down his art. Brymo also seemingly rubbished three of Nigeria’ biggest singers, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido by claiming to have no idea who they are. This was after a Twitter user stated that they are all better than him and that his music released since the past five years can’t be compared to what those guys have recently. Brymo started it all by telling the ‘non-fans’ on social media to tell their favourite artistes to take a two year break and see if their music will still be felt. He tweeted: “Make your fav take a two-year break make we see who go listen to them on return”. The twitter used fired at him saying: READ MORE; https://busynaija.com.ng/2020/04/14/who-are-those-singer-brymo-shades-wizkid-burna-boy-and-davido/
