Politics / Osinbajo Preaches Mercy, Grace For Nigeria In Christmas Day Message by Zeemam: 2:49pm On Dec 25, 2022
OSINBAJO PREACHES MERCY, GRACE FOR NIGERIA IN CHRISTMAS DAY MESSAGE

The celebration of Christmas reminds us of the grace of God, and the birth of Jesus Christ is the beginning of a new covenant of God’s mercy, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this today when journalists accosted him for a chat after the Christmas Service at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja. The Vice President had delivered the sermon at a hybrid service attended by his wife, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, senior government officials and others - both online and physically.

The VP, who is also a Pastor, told State House Correspondents that his message to Nigeria is “the message of Christmas which is the birth of the new covenant, the birth of grace. God’s grace and mercy are what we celebrate today.”

Continuing, Prof Osinbajo stated that “the birth of Jesus Christ is the birth of the grace of God. From the moment Christ was born, God said He wasn’t going to hold us to account for sin so long as we believed in what He did - the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

“Before we had to pay for our sins and we had to bear the consequence of sin. We would always continue to sin, but with the coming of the Lord Jesus, He has come to replace us and substitute all our unrighteousness and replace it with His own righteousness, as long as we believe in him.”

Earlier in his sermon during the Church service, Prof. Osinbajo noted the difference between the old covenant which was based on performance and fulfilling of the law of sin and death and the new covenant which is based on the grace of God through the death of Jesus.

Citing the scriptures in Luke 2:4-17, the VP noted that “the birth of Jesus brought about the new covenant because mankind couldn’t fulfil the old covenant and fell short every time.

“God knew the old covenant didn’t work and then introduced the new covenant in the form of Jesus who came to fulfil the law.” The Vice President added that “what is required for the new covenant is that we believe in Jesus.”

The Christmas Service, an annual event at the Aso Villa Chapel, featured a bible study session moderated by the Chaplain, Pastor Joseph Oluseyi Malomo, celebration, singing and dancing.

OSINBAJO ADVOCATES FOR MORE UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENTS

*Says: that is the future of university funding

*Olabisi Onabanjo University VC commends VP’s selfless service to the institution

Given that budgetary allocations alone cannot sustain the running of public universities, the future of the university system depends on the adoption of independent but creative sources of funding, including the establishment of an endowment fund, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo was speaking on Thursday when he hosted a delegation from the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa. The team was led by the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Abgoola.

“Funding in the university system (public universities) has to be diversified. The system has to find a way to sustain itself. We really have to look carefully at how universities can make money independently. Whether it is an endowment or some other way, adopting a business model.

“All of the great universities around the world have endowment funds. Raising money through independent sources for funding university education is a serious thing,” the Vice President said.

The VP urged the management of OOU to adopt other approaches to funding its activities, noting that “depending on government alone or the Tetfund for development of infrastructure is not sustainable.

“I encourage you to create an endowment fund, in addition to the other approaches that you will adopt. Olabisi Onabanjo University can become a model for others but it has to have independent sources of raising funds.

“There should be serious-minded people running the endowment office. This is the future and way forward for the university system in Nigeria. If you do it well, the university will really excel.”

The Vice President recalled how he and two other academics from the University of Lagos’ Law Faculty were involved in teaching Law in the earlier years of the university.

The VP narrated how, for three years every Tuesday, he and the two other lecturers would travel with the then Dean of Law at the University of Lagos to Ago-Iwoye (where the institution is located), to take lessons and return to Lagos the next day.

Earlier in his remarks, Prof. Agboola thanked the VP for his selfless contribution to the growth of the University especially as a pioneer lecturer in the Faculty of Law, building it from the scratch.

He recollected how the VP mentored many law students at the University and his support in entrenching the culture of research at the institution.

The VC also made a presentation to the Vice President on the current state of the University, its challenges and projections for the future, seeking more support, especially in the area of infrastructure development.

Other members of the OOU management at the meeting were Dr Adekunle David from the Faculty of Engineering; Mr Joseph Osifeso, a Principal Assistant Registrar and Goodwill Ambassadors of the institution, Mr Michael Matthew and Mr Abah Adejoh.

OSINBAJO VISITS MALAMI’S FAMILY, SAYS HE WAS “A GOOD EXAMPLE, BLESSING TO MANY, INCLUDING ME”

*Maritime workers present excellence award to VP at Presidential Villa

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has paid a condolence visit to the family of late Dr Shehu Malami, a Sokoto prince who passed on yesterday, describing him as a “good example, an inspiration to me and many others,” adding, he would be sorely missed.

The Vice President who spoke at the residence of the deceased in Abuja, said “he was always a source of inspiration and a good example to many of us.

“Of course, we all know that he was a good example in diplomacy, (he was ambassador to South Africa); in business, he founded so many businesses (he was one of the founders of Ecobank, and in Standard Chartered Bank, he was a director). And even in the World Economic Forum, he was on the International Advisory Council.”

Continuing, the VP said “his impact was tremendous and I think that he will be greatly missed not just by his community and Sokoto State, but by the entire country because his voice was a voice of authority, represented hard work and diligence, and unity for the entire country.”

“At a time when our country is going through so much, it is very sad that we will miss such an important voice – the voice of brotherhood, the voice of unity. But we are happy that he didn’t just come, he came to this earth and achieved so much and he was a blessing to many including myself and I am sure many other people here,” the VP observed.

“I just want to say that God is the one who gives life and is the only one who can determine when we will go. I pray that the Lord almighty will comfort all members of his family and preserve his memory and his legacy,” he added.

The VP was received by the wife, children, members of the family and associates of the late Ambassador.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Vice President received on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, the leadership of the Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) where he lauded the efforts and contributions of workers in the nation’s maritime sector, noting their “hard work over the years and steadfastness in ensuring that maritime transportation works.”

The group led by its President, Mr Adeyemi Aroyewun, had earlier presented an award to the Vice President in recognition of his contribution to the development of the sector.

The VP noted that despite the challenges of operating in the maritime sector, the hard work and steadfastness of the workers was commendable.

He assured the group of the Federal Government’s commitment to address concerns faced by operators in the maritime sectors, noting that “it is a very difficult environment.”

Earlier in his remarks, Mr Aroyewun commended the efforts of the VP in the development of the maritime sector, noting his support in ensuring the ease of movement around the port area.

He then outlined challenges confronting workers and other stakeholders in the sector before presenting the award to the VP.

The delegation to the Presidential Villa comprised the Board of Trustees, Chairman of COMTUA, Mr Raheem Moruf; Deputy President of the body, Mr Raji Adesina and Director of Welfare, Mr Ademola Adekoyeni, among other officials.
