When Nigerians saw the number — 490 years — many thought it had to be a typo.

But it wasn’t.

On February 5, 2026, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja delivered one of the most striking financial crime judgments in recent years. Roberts Orya, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), was convicted and sentenced over a N2.4 billion fraud case that had been in court since 2021.

The sentence? Ten years on each of 49 counts.

Add it together, and it becomes 490 years.

Now, before anyone imagines a man serving centuries behind bars, it’s important to understand what that figure actually means — and why this case matters beyond the dramatic headline.

How It Started
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) first arraigned Orya in 2021. He faced a 49-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, forgery, and advance fee fraud.

According to court documents, the charges centered on loans allegedly approved under false representations during his time as Managing Director of NEXIM Bank.

One of the key allegations stated that in September 2011, he induced the bank to release N488 million to a company, Treasuremix Construction Limited, under the claim that Luxurium Leisure Services Limited had applied for and was the actual beneficiary of the loan.

Prosecutors argued that this representation was false.

Another count revealed that in February 2013, an additional N630 million was allegedly released under similar circumstances.

Across the 49 counts, the total amount involved was said to be N2.4 billion.

Orya pleaded not guilty when the charges were read, setting the stage for a trial that would stretch over several years.

What Happened in Court
During the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses to testify. According to the judgment delivered by Justice F.E. Messiri, the evidence presented was strong enough to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

After reviewing the testimonies and documents, the court found the former bank chief guilty on all 49 counts.

The sentence that followed immediately caught public attention.

Ten years imprisonment per count.

Forty-nine counts.

Total: 490 years.

However, the court ruled that the sentences will run concurrently. In simple terms, this means the prison terms will be served at the same time, not one after the other.

Still, the symbolism of 490 years sends a powerful message.
