Nigeria Pays The Least Wages Compared To Other OPEC Member (Check out the minimum wage of other countries)
May 28, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

In Nigeria, the minimum wage for an average worker is pegged at N18, 000. Among other OPEC countries, Nigeria reportedly pays its workers the least wages.

Areoye Oyebola, Chairman, Movement For Nigeria’s Total Transformation, MNTT in an opinion published by The News magazine stated that while Nigeria pays N18, 000 as minimum wage, other OPEC members pay their workers 4 to 12 times higher than the average wage.

Oyebola, a renowned author and publisher of 26 books stated that United Arab Emirates pays its worker, in Naira equivalent a sum of N 217,360 as Kuwait pays N161,461.

Other members of the international oil body like Saudi Arabia gives averagely N99, 327 to workers; Venezuela, N95, 839 and Iran N86, 585 ‘’The figures are quite revealing and disheartening when compared to other OPEC countries’’ he exclaimed.

This analysis, according to him explains why more than 100 million Nigerians live in destitution.

Oyebola appealed to the incoming president, Muhammadu Buhari to put an end to the development.

Crime / Man Dies After Drinking Competition… At A Funeral In Benin by Zolar4ever(m): 5:42pm On Mar 19, 2015
An alcohol-drinking contest has claimed one life and hospitalized two others in a Benin hospital. The deceased, Famous Ogbeide, 25, and three others were drinking different brands of hot drinks at the funeral of their friend’s father.

The Nation newspaper reports that he emerged winner in the first and second rounds of the contest, but failed to collect his prize of N4,000 as he died in the hospital.

The victim allegedly collapsed by the roadside after gulping the drink. It was also gathered that one of the victims pulled out of the contest when he began to cough and vomit.

The police have arrested the organiser of the funeral party who was said to have arrived Nigeria from Malaysia the day before.

The deceased’s mother said her son told her he was attending a funeral of his friend’s father. She added that his father died last December.

Police spokesperson DSP Joseph Edoigiawerie said the case was being handled by the homicide department of the state police command headquarters, Benin City.

cc: Seun, lalasticlala, Obinoscopy...abeg help move this dramatic turnout at a federal university to the front. We need to torch light the circumstances, turn of event, tensions and negotiations involved in this incident. Human lives are been maimed daily.

It was Oshodi last two weeks. Now a federal university....leadership elections appear to be too difficult to organise and losers are too rigid to accept the outcome. How can Nairaland help sef? Maybe we need to do a summit on this summit undecided

I think we need to have a thread on organising peaceful elections. For instance, every week, we can be "torch-lighting" topics such as elections in the house of God, house of god, schools, youth association, women association, father association etc.

Education / Violence Mars YABATECH SUG Election, 4 Students Feared Dead by Zolar4ever(m): 12:45pm On Mar 10, 2015
Naij.com can authoritatively report that two students of the Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Yaba, Lagos, have been gunned down.

Reports from the institution have it that the students had just held their Students’ Union government elections and the winners were to be revealed last night.

However, trouble started last evening when some students, sensing that their candidate was not going to win, began to shoot sporadically within the school premises.
One of the students of the institution who spoke with our correspondent, disclosed that two students had been shot at the last count and that one of her friends was already in tears following the shooting.

“One lady here broke into tears when she heard that somebody she knows had been shot. Whether the people who were shot are dead or not is what I cannot ascertain now because we are all in our hostel.

“The shooting lasted for about 30 minutes but everywhere is quite calm as we speak.

“We can only get more information tomorrow morning because nobody has the confidence to move out of the hostel this night because we are not certain if the shooting will continue,” she said.

Another eyewitness told our correspondent that the riot started in front of the School of Management and Business Studies just a few metres from the main entrance.

“As we speak, I can confirm that two people have been shot. I think they died on the spot as well. But, I cannot truly ascertain their conditions because they were laying lifeless after the shooting,” the student said on condition of anonymity.

A student of the institution, this morning, explained that about four of the students were shot and that it was a lady that led the ‘operation’.

“Honestly, the elections had been free and fair and everybody was glad that it had come and gone,” the final-year student began.

The source who pleaded anonymity, stated further in clear terms that, “I was in class at about 7 or 8pm when I started hearing sporadic gunshots all over the place.

“It was so fierce that I had to quickly take cover. When I got out, reliable guys here told me that four people had been shot already.

“The amazing thing is that the person who was shooting was said to be a lady, those who saw her confirmed it. But they did not disclose her identity just yet, I really do not think she is a student of YCT.

“Another thing that cannot be confirmed right away is whether the people who were shot are dead or alive because I did not see any corpse this morning“.

The students, who were preparing for their exams slated to start on Wednesday 11 March, may have to wait for a lengthier period as the school management may likely shift the date following the recent violence that marred the SUG election.

“Students are very few in the school as I speak and we are not likely to start our exams this week unless the Management wants us to continue despite all that has happened.

“The date for the commencement of the exam is 11 March, but whether it will be rescheduled or not is what nobody is aware of fight now.

“I really hope that everything remains as calm as it is this morning because yesterday was really hell in the school premises”.

Reports also have it that policemen with about 8 vans stormed the institution’s Yaba Campus yesterday to restore order to the school.

Rumours are now rife that the students are likely to engage in another round of gun battle tonight as some others have vowed to protest the commencement of their exams slated to start tomorrow.
Naij.com previously reported that, in anticipation of the Students’ Union government elections, the union of the school recently hosted some of the students of the institution in what could best be described as a feast.

One student who pleaded anonymity had this to say on the matter;

“Every year before a new set of excos arrive, the outgoing ones kill cow and cook rice for all students to enjoy themselves. This year was not an exemption as the students queued to get their portions and, it was really a sight to behold because of the way they were rushing for the food.”

In another development, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics may embark on another nationwide strike over the poor state of polytechnics in Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / 2015 Forbes Billionaires List Out – 5 Nigerians Make The Cut by Zolar4ever(m): 8:21pm On Mar 04, 2015
The 2015 Forbes list of billionaires is now out. Five Nigerian made the cut – Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Folorunsho Alakija, Femi Otedola and Abdulsamad Rabiu. Orji Uzor Kalu and Tony Elumelu who made the list last year were dropped off the list this year.

Bill Gates is still the richest man in the world. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is now the 16th richest man in the world. The youngest billionaire in the world is 24 year old Evan Spiegel, the co-founder of photo- messaging app, Snapchat. Aliko Dangote is the year’s biggest loser, hi fortune dropped to $14.7 billion from $25 billion last year.

For our 29th annual guide to the globe’s richest, we found a record 1,826 billionaires with an aggregate net worth of $7.05 trillion, up from $6.4 trillion a year ago. The total includes 290 newcomers, 71 of whom hail from China. Youth are on the rise: A record 46 among the ranks are under age 40. One earthward note: The average net worth of list members came in at $3.86 billion, down $60 million from 2014.

Bill Gates is once again the richest person on the planet, a title he’s held for 16 of the past 21 years. His fortune grew $3.2 billion since last year to $79.2 billion, despite a gift of $1.5 billion in Microsoft MSFT-0.47% shares to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in November 2014. Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico comes in again at No. 2 while revered American investor Warren Buffett took back the No. 3 spot from Spain’s Amancio Ortega (now No. 4); not even the largest IPO in history was enough to beat the Oracle of Omaha this year. Buffett was the list’s biggest gainer, up $14.5 billion to $72.7 billion, thanks to Berkshire Hathaway’s rising share price.  Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg moves up 5 spots to number 16, his first time ranked among the world’s 20 richest. Ma and three other Chinese are among the the biggest gainers and appear among the 50 richest on the list.

Zuckerberg is also the leader in a youth revolution that has minted 46 billionaires under the age of 40. The youngest billionaire on the planet is Evan Spiegel, 24, co-founder of photo- messaging app Snapchat. California, driven by Silicon Valley tech companies, has spawned 23 new billionaires, including cofounders of car-hailing service Uber cofounders Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, and their first employee Ryan Graves. Elizabeth Holmes, who runs blood-testing firm Theranos, debuts on the global list as the youngest self-made woman at age 31. The state now has 131 individuals with 10-figure net worths, more than any other country besides China and the U.S.

The year’s biggest loser in dollar terms is Aliko Dangote of Nigeria, whose fortune dropped to $14.7 billion from $25 billion last year, propelled downward by a weaker Nigerian currency and shrinking demand for cement, his largest asset. He still retains the title of Africa’s richest man. The country that was lost the most ground by far was Russia, which now has 88 billionaires down from 111, less than not just the U.S. and China but now also Germany and India.

One hundred thirty-eight people from the 2014 list dropped out of the ranks altogether including fashion designer Michael Kors, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Zulily’s Mark Vadon and many Russians. Guatemala has a billionaire for the first time, and Iceland returns to the ranks after a five-year absence, the result of a comeback by Thor Bjorgolfsson, who’s now the only billionaire in Iceland’s history.
There’s no doubt that entrepreneurship is thriving globally. Fully 1,191 members of the list are self-made billionaires, while just 230 inherited their wealth. Another 405 inherited at least a portion but are still working to increase their fortunes.
Nairaland / General / Lagos Babes Seeking For Job From SURE-P Turn To S E’x Slaves by Zolar4ever(m): 8:23am On Mar 02, 2015
Listening to couple of graduates narrate their ordeal in the hands of the management of the federal government Subsidy Re-Investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) in Lagos state recently, one will definitely be moved into tears going by the trauma and hardship these innocent job seekers were made to go through in the last two years; yet, none of them have been given employment letter let alone salary.

The management of SURE-P in Lagos led by a politician named Alhaji Abdul Razak Rafiu Otto has made life miserable for the graduates who had high hopes of getting employed through the President Jonathan’s SURE-P initiative, is alleged to have been extorting money from applicants through different means for almost 2 years.

Surprisingly, one of the top managers at SURE-P usually called Alhaji was caught pants-down with one of the female applicants doing it right inside his office.

The discovery shook the establishment that management had no choice but to show Alhaji the exit door.

Abdul Razak Rafiu Otto

Many road users would have definitely witnessed thousands of job seekers besieging an office by the old Toll Gate close to 7up Bottling Company along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway on daily basis. These job seekers converge every day to either process their employment or training under the SURE-P/FERMA programme. But it will interest the public to know that none of the thousands of heads seen at the SURE-P office has been given a dime for almost 2years; the expected training allowance or salary has become a mirage of sort.Investigation revealed that top management staff of SURE-P has been selling all free items meant for processing application to the almost 50,000 applicants. The female amongst them are said to be losing in two ways; apart from coughing out their money, they are turned to s e’x slaves just because of the promise that their cases will be facilitated swiftly than their male counterpart.
According to some of the applicants approached by SOCIETY REPORTERS, it has become a common knowledge that what SURE-P means to them is nothing but SCAM. One of the people who spoke with us, Kehinde Akeem says “it’s a pity we are being exploited because of our situation, I have paid about N180,000 in almost two years; some of us paid about N300,000 in total. The money we first paid was N35,000 for Federal Road Committee on Surveillance Patrol Against Road Abuse (FERSPARA), we also bought another form from SURE-P for N25,000. We bought Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi FIIRO for N10,000.

Religion / Man Sentenced To Death For Renouncing Islam In Saudi Arabia by Zolar4ever(m): 6:14pm On Feb 26, 2015
Sometimes you just can’t help but love Nigeria because of some of the rights we enjoy – like the freedom to practice any religion as that may not be the case in some other countries – And according to Dailymail, an Islamic court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to death for renouncing his Muslim faith and posting a video on a social media site which shows him ripping up the Koran before hitting it with his shoe.

In the video posted on social media site Keek by the man, he was allegedly seen ripping up the Koran and hitting it with a shoe.

The man has now been sentenced to death for denouncing his Muslim faith and ‘various other acts of blasphemy.’

According to a source who was in the General Court:

‘In the video he cursed God, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his daughter Fatimah and ripped a copy of the Holy Qur’an and hit it with a shoe.

‘The death sentence was issued after his apostasy was proven,’

Saudi Arabia follows a strict school of Islam and gives the clergy control over its justice system and executions in Saudi Arabia are usually carried out by public beheading.
