Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has stirred reactions after praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for what she described as unprecedented attention to the South-South region.

In a video circulating on social media, Patience was heard saying: “This is the first government that remembers our South South region.”

The comment has generated debate, particularly because Patience’s husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015.
Some Nigerians have consequently questioned the implication of her remark, asking whether it amounts to an admission that previous administrations, including that of her husband, did not do enough for the oil-producing region.

Others, however, have interpreted the statement differently, arguing that Patience Jonathan may simply have been acknowledging specific projects, appointments or interventions undertaken by the Tinubu administration in the South South.

Her comments also come amid renewed political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, during which Goodluck Jonathan has periodically been mentioned in political circles as a possible presidential contender, although he has not declared a candidacy.


Patience Jonathan has in recent times made other comments expressing support for the Tinubu administration. She has reportedly stressed the need for Nigerians to support the government, while maintaining that Nigeria can only have one president at a time.

Her latest statement has therefore attracted both praise and scepticism, with supporters of the Tinubu administration viewing it as an endorsement of the President’s policies in the region, while critics are questioning the political implications of the former First Lady’s position.

The South South region, comprising Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states, remains strategically important to Nigeria because of its major contribution to the country’s oil and gas industry.

For now, Patience Jonathan’s statement has opened another conversation about the relationship between successive federal administrations and the oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta—and whether the Tinubu administration is indeed doing more for the region than its predecessors.

Anambra state has tripplled its igr from the meager 10b obi left it in 2014 below enugu and abia,obiano trippled it in 8 yrs and soludo is poised to double obiano's in 5 yrs......obi was rather abysmal, couldn't harness the commercial capacity of anambra as the business hub of the SE to bolster the states igr to number one in SE.

Still saved everything in his bank to bolster its capital base why the state suffered.

How then does obi tend to increase our tax to gdp,how does he intend to bolster govt finances without being over dependent on oil? Remember he said borrowing was wrong.

Also can someone pls explain why anambra has a lower igr than enugu and abia with a higher population and larger commercial sector?

Its quite revealing also that the last 10 states are from the north behind ebonyi with a smaller population and land size and also lower allocations.....the north terribly lags behind the south in development and the northern govs really need to wake up.
