So is the Senate now disenfranchising education. Is that what developed nations do? This is not part of the SDGs which Nigeria is a signatory to. Education must be inclusive, no matter the age

Re: Senate Insists On 16 Years As Requirement For Tertiary Institution Admission by Angelfrost(m): 7:58am On May 02
Sigh... Why should there even be an age limit?!!

Is that supposed to be an issue or a priority?!!

Why can't there be an age limit for marrying ladies off?!!

Sometimes, I wonder if Nigerian leaders travel out of this nation, or if they just deliberately choose to be archaic with regards to leadership decisions.

Ot should be minimum of 17 years.

That does not mean 10 year olds are college graduates. They have to be exceptional.

In Nigeria, an average student of 14 years can be made to pass WAEC and gain admission through malpractices

Until our institutions can be insulated against strike action, this discussion is unnecessary.

You can’t peg an age for university admission when the course duration itself has not been pegged!

I finished secondary school at 15 and was considered too old at home ( I moved primary school a few times costing me 2 years)

Most of my relations finished at 13 or 14

There are people abroad who graduate from University at 13,14 15 ... Yes university

Some people get PhD at 19

Putting a cap to this age of admission is wrong for a nation that wants to advance

Giving a child of 19 a PhD degree makes no sense. Those people went to school to acquire book knowledge without deep reasoning.

If you doubt me, go back and read the things you were taught when you were in primary school. The way you understand them now can never be the same as the way you understood it then.

People's brains and ability to deeply understand the world and the things around them improve as they get older. Age comes with experiences which allow an adult understand the world better than a child.

University in Nigeria is a whole different world, expecially the Federal Schools.. A child shouldn't just be educationally sound to be thrown into its realm. Some degree of emotional, street smart, psychlogical and independence is important and then the student can further build on all these aspects as they go on to build intelligence as well.

While 16yrs does not guarantee anyone will already have some degree of all those, it is at least better than below 16. I see people comparing Nigeria to the West and saying they enter and graduate much earlier. We all know Nigerian Universities aren't as safe, protected and developed as those universities. Even the mature people self dey see shege, be careful not to send little kids to their ruin. Schools like Convenant and co, are better suited for much younger lads albeit not perfect too.

Maturity of lives, mindset, and ability to handles affairs of life is key to overall development of an individuals ,as Modern Societies are becoming so Complex.
That is why Americans ensured that after the age of 18- years, you are called an Adult, ability to handles events of life and anything you do wrongly here, will be visited and possibly by the - Law Enforcement and Law Courts of the land- you ought to know better.
So,16- years as a Template to enter a Tertiary Institution -is allowed and thereafter, the Students turned to become a growing adults before graduation!

I agree. 18 is a waste of time to serious people. We cannot be a barrier in the way of progress.

If they can let them do it.

Where are you people rushing to?
Imagine finishing secondary school at 13, and entering university at same age! Little wonder we now have student union bodies who cannot speak for themselves not to talk of being active in national affairs

Bolded.

Tahir needs to know of people abroad who graduated when they were 15. It may sound Greek to him.
Tahir merely wants to place every Nigerian teen on the same bench with the Almajiris in his Arewa.

Sounds reasonable and credible to set the record straight before this personal counsel of the Honourable Minister creates serious problems in the university admission process if it is mistaken for the law.

Even if FG wants to experiment with a new age limit, I do not think it should be immediately implemented because the candidates have sat for the exam and chosen their preferred university based on the age limit set by their university of choice. Also, it can't be done without enacting a law to that effect and not without encroaching on the autonomy of the universities.

This comment by the Senate and last week's Punch editorial raised valid points that make such idea a misplaced priority so it's necessary for the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman , to drop the idea and let the university fix its own age limit but shouldn't be less than 16 years. According to the Head of JAMB, Prof Oloyede, the law that empowers JAMB doesn't give it power to determine age limit for admission by universities.
