Nigerians aren't ready for genuine change. When they're ready they'll vote in the right people. Until then, they should keep enduring the hardship their poor choices has brought upon them.

Can you name one politician that can be termed right choice in Nigeria...?

What this country need is military leaders.

^^^
No it doesn't.

We've been there and done that, as they say. And it didn't work.

Nigerians are in trouble now because they habitually make poor leadership choices - and crucially, Nigerians have refused to learn from their mistakes.

A military regime would make things much worse, believe it or not.

Badmashiii:
We need someone to rule us with iron hand. Someone with big enough balls like ABACHA or PUTIN. Someone decisive and bold.

^^^
What the country needs are strong institutions. It needs strong institutions more than it needs strong men. It needs restructuring/reforms of key segments of its laws and processes. Yes, this country needs a man who has most of these traits you listed, but without proper checks and balances on his powers, he WILL abuse them. It is asking way too much to place so much hope and faith in one man.

Were you around during the Abacha years? Those were not good times. Abacha WAS a bad leader. Do you really want to go back to times like those?

Badmashiii:
Any democratically elected president is good as useless.

^^^
He is as useless as we want him to be...or as useless as we have made him.

We have federal lawmakers. We have state governors. We have state lawmakers. These 3 groups deserve perhaps even more attention from Nigerians than the presidency but as I said, Nigerians habitually make poor leadership choices - and then they expect miracles. It doesn't work that way.

Our institutions and our structure/foundation need serious attention. Soldiers cannot fix that - I can assure you.

But right now,it's only the military that can do anything concerning the state of this country.

^^^
Again....no.

They had their shot (pun intended) in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. And they failed. Miserably.

Corruption is a very serious problem in this country today. It always has been. We can see all what's happening with the BAT administration. But I can tell you for free that corruption will be worse, much worse under a military regime.

South Korean soldiers seized power in a series of military takeovers many, many years ago. They were brutal and did what soldiers do - the usual stuff like giving long haired civilians forced haircuts in the street, etc. But those soldiers set their country on the path to industrialization. The story of that time was that if a steel plant was poorly built, those soldiers simply blew it up with military grade explosives and ordered the contractor to re-do it. Today, South Korea is an industrial power.

Meanwhile...in one other country like that, soldiers also seized power in several coups... but they were more interested in beer & pepper soup than iron & steel. undecided Those soldiers did absolutely nothing about their country's steel complex and today, that complex lies in ruins due to neglect - a sad reminder of what might have been. That plant in Ajaokuta has not worked for one day. And these are the soldiers you think will fix things? undecided

Badmashiii:
Unfortunately, the senior officers are well paid and therefore lack the motivation for something different. There's no assurance that the result of a coup would give them the same benefits they are getting in the current government.

^^^
You seem to have some faith in the abilities of this country's senior military officers. undecided I can assure you there is nothing there.

This country has been fighting boko haram for one and a half decades and these soldiers have still not been able to deliver. All we get is a multitude of excuses for their failure and incompetence. undecided Now, if they are failing at soldiering (a job they were actually trained for), how can they succeed at running a country (a job they were not trained for?) undecided

Badmashiii:
The junior officers are where lies our hope.

^^^

This is a terrible, terrible mistake.

Junior officers? undecided

Like senior like junior: there is nothing there!!

These soldiers (senior and junior) stood idly by while over 200 people were killed in the Barkin Ladi massacre. One of their "generals" blamed the "terrain". undecided

Consider that this is what these men were trained for...and this "difficult" terrain is in their own country. So what will they say if we have a dispute with Iceland or Afghanistan and we need to invade?

These men could not deliver on their primary responsibility and you want to hand the country over to them to do a job they know next to nothing about? undecided

Autocracy is the best option for nigeria. To hell with democracy.

The military leaders centralized power. Decisions are made and acted upon as fast as possible. And again, the brutality of the military is what nigerians need at this moment.

However,we can't deny that military regimes comes with their own drawbacks.

But do you think a democratically elected civilian can make a solid difference concerning the state of the country?

Just so you know,Boko haram and shits cant withstand the full force of nigerian military. You have a good point. Putting our faith on a single man is truly asking much.

The president due to his position receive most of the blame even for something partially or even entirely not his fault.

But what do you think is the most effective thing to do?

Badmashiii:
But what do you think is the most effective thing to do?

^^^

The short answer is for Nigerians to take the political process much more seriously and hold their leaders fully accountable. Nigerians need to understand that democracy is much more than elections - it requires constant, vigilant engagement. The culture needs to change - Nigerians need to insist on the strengthening of their institutions and a full separation of powers.

The long answer which is more practical and specific is:

Have a referendum (or whatever you want to call it) to answer the question of if Nigeria is a real country. A lot of people want out of this country and they mean it - IPOB, Boko Haram, Oduduwa nation etc. The sentiment has heightened with the rise in poverty and hopelessness in Nigeria. It would be foolish to pretend it doesn't exist. The problem is HOW to organize this.

Once the question of Nigeria's status as a real (or unreal) nation is answered...the next step is to draw up a real and proper people's constitution - not that booby trapped hornet's nest that a few military generals hurriedly put together before leaving power a quarter of a century ago. Again, the question is HOW to organize this - will it be through the crop of lawmakers in power now?

Decide once and for all whether a federal system or a parliamentary system is best for our needs. Implement the provisions of the previous constitutional conferences.

If Nigerians decide to retain a federal system, fiscal federalism is non-negotiable.

And so on...

In this country the crisis of leadership is discussed every damn day. But the crisis of followership - which is even more important - does not get any attention. Trust me on one thing: when Nigerians decide they have had enough, you will see a turnaround. We just haven't gotten to that point yet.

^^^
Fair point.

They did carry out some projects, I agree. The 3rd mainland bridge was built during a military regime. The infrastructure built by the defunct PTF was built during a military regime. But they were notoriously corrupt, wasteful and hated any form of scrutiny or accountability. We know about the corruption in civilian administrations because the press and civil society has some freedom to inform and educate Nigerians about what's going on. There was nothing like that during military rule - they made sure to gag the press and civil society groups. If Nigerians really knew the extent of corruption of her military rulers past...lipsrsealed

Badmashiii:
And again, the brutality of the military is what nigerians need at this moment.

^^^
undecided

No.

Yes, Nigerians have a disdain for rules. But we don't need to have soldiers in power for that to change. Surely you saw the video from 1984 of a young woman complaining about the behaviour of soldiers at filling stations. Thirty years gone...and regrettably, nothing has changed. You will get a lot more of that sort of behaviour from them if they are in power - they will break rules at will, while insisting that civilians must abide by those rules. undecided There is no hypocrisy like the hypocrisy of our soldiers.

Badmashiii:
However,we can't deny that military regimes comes with their own drawbacks.

^^^
On this, we are in full agreement.

Badmashiii:
But do you think a democratically elected civilian can make a solid difference concerning the state of the country?

^^^
Yes.

It isn't one man's job alone though.

Badmashiii:
Just so you know,Boko haram and shits cant withstand the full force of nigerian military.

^^^
We've been hearing this for a long time now. Unfortunately, the evidence doesn't support this. I would like to go to Konduga or Shiroro but I cannot...because 'boko haram and shits' are in control. My family has told me pointedly that there's no money for any ransom.

Badmashiii:
Bro don't ever look down on nigeria military. You won't believe what they have in their arsenal.

^^^
The problem is that this 'arsenal' is always used indiscriminately against entire villages, communities and rural settlements somewhere...while the Bello Turjis and Kachallas of this world remained untouched for many, many years. The truth speaks for itself.
