An Ogun State traditional ruler, Oba Abiodun Ajayi, has advocated the introduction of death penalty for those found guilty of corrupt practices.

Ajayi, who is the Ayanperuwa of Sotubo, Ijagba, Sagamu, was one of the pro-democracy activists who fought the military over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late MKO Abiola.

He believed that without such a tough sanction, corruption would continue to thrive in the country.

The monarch said corruption had become like a circus show, with the accused becoming popular once arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

He said, "Somebody stole N100bn and you take him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Immediately EFFC arrests you, you have become one of the most important persons in this country. These billions are still with him.

"All those who stole money in this country are still moving around. The only person who was punished was Bode George. All the probes they have conducted, which one has succeeded?

"The solution is that anybody found guilty of corruption should be sentenced to death. Death penalty is the solution to the problem."
