Tetfund Remains Lifeline For Tertiary Institutions Wake-up Call - Prof.yakubu by mamikky: 2:57pm On Jul 31, 2012
“If not for TETfund’s intervention, the academic programmes of Nigerian Defence Academy and indeed Nigerian universities would not have been what is it is today. Neither would they have been able to achieve their desired pride of place.’’ The above statement by Major General Chukwuemeka Onwuamaegbu, the commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, aptly captures the excitement and deepest satisfaction, ever expressed by the managers of the nation’s tertiary institution over the continued assistance they have been receiving from the tertiary education trust under the leadership of Professor Yakubu Mahmuod.

Tertiary institutions in Nigeria including universities, colleges of education, polytechnics and so on, have been at the receiving end of several interventionist programmes of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETfund, which according to the executive secretary of the fund, is not a one off experience but an annual enterprise, “so long as the benefitting schools rightfully appropriate their interventionist allocations, to qualify them for the next allocation.’’
Unlike in the past where fiscal grants are often misappropriated and converted into a share of the so called national cake, TETfund allocations are strictly supervised to ensure effective utilisation of approved funds. Just as a TETfund staff who pleaded anonymity volunteered “we are not an armchair agency, when we release grants to institutions, we join them out there in the field to ensure compliance with the agreements reached and when the projects are completed, we commission them.
TETfund to the members of the academic community is the best thing that has happened to them, considering that under the present leadership, of the agency, education at the tertiary level has certainly received the needed boost.
