Operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) yesterday arrested the Gombe State correspondent of the People’s Daily newspaper, Mallam Awwal Ahmed, at his residence in Gombe. It was gathered that the reporter was arrested alongside six others, including a   nursing mother during a raid. It was further gathered that the state’s Director of the State Security Service, Mr Bitrus Asha, in a telephone conversation confirmed the arrest, saying it was in connection with an investigation being carried out by the command. A source at the reporter’s house said the operatives in large numbers stormed the area at around 2:00 am. He said during the about one hour operation, occupants of the house were asked to queue up before they made the arrest, adding that the nursing mother may have been picked up in place of her husband.

The SSS did not state exactly why they are holding the reporter and others, but promised to get back to newsmen as soon as possible.
