Aregbesola Announces 'O’Elders' N10,000 Monthly Allowance by ifebosco: 11:20pm On Aug 05, 2012
Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Sunday announced N10,000 monthly allowance for 1,602 elderly persons in the state.

The governor made the announcement during the inauguration of Osun Elderly Persons Scheme in Osogbo.

Aregbesola said that the scheme, tagged “O’Elders’’, was aimed at assisting aged persons who could no longer fend for themselves.

He stressed that a responsible government and individuals should always strive to take proper care of elderly persons.

Aregbesola stressed that his administration would do everything possible to make old people to “live the rest of their lives in happiness and good health.

“A census of the elderly ones was taken across the state and the most vulnerable ones were selected for the first phase of the scheme.

“Those that need urgent medical attention are undergoing treatment,’’ he added.

Aregbesola promised to implement the scheme in phases and appealed to the people to always to take care of the aged.

The governor directed the beneficiaries to henceforth visit their local government secretariats every month to collect the allowance.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Adebisi Olawoye, the President of the Osun chapter of the Elderly Persons Association of Nigeria, commended the state government for the gesture.

He pledged the association’s support for the government’s plans to transform the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some elderly persons, who have yet to benefit from the scheme, appealed to the governor to commence the second phase as soon as possible (NAN)

Is this the best you can come up with in the face of this laudable effort? If I may ask, how much is N10,000 into 5000 (assuming there are 5,000 of these elderly persons in the state) on monthly basis?

Is it too much for a state to spend on its elderly monthly?

At least its not up to 1% of the amount one person stole from Oil subsidy ( Tukur and Akala children)

We have enough to go around each citizen if One person will not embezzle monies made for more than 1 million people

Is it then creative for them to embezzle the funds or employ the aged/ old citizen that do not have the strength to work/walk again?

If the funds are not given to the aged to assist them, the funds will be sleeping in someone's foreign account and the aged will be sleeping and die in poverty and nobody will do anything about it. But the Europeans also do same or am I wrong?

I just love the last paragraph. There are too many POOR ELDERS in any state in Nigeria for a select few to be termed O'ELDERS. Anyway, his action is laudable if the list doesn't contain some young thugs' names. I have my reservations though.

You didn't answer the question. I did not ask you how much each political office holder is paid each month. This plan does not tell you that they will have a salary reduction in order that this can be sustained. So, again, the question remains can this be sustained.

The problem with many who think like you is that you are quick to rejoice, deferring the thinking aspect to later. Even laudable projects are meaningless at the end of the day if you are unable to sustain them.
We all saw last year when many states wailed when the minimum wage was increased by about N10,000. If N10,000 was as easy as you suggest, why do you think they complained and demanded that their allowance be increased in order that they(the states) could meet the new requirement?
The question is not on whether states can or should spend on it's elderly but on how sustainable the plan to spend on the elderly is. That is question is asked even here in the US.

We should not be asking that question because if we read the article again it is immediately clear that this is one of the efforts Governments must find money to sustain. In fact, it is long overdue and should be adopted throughout Nigeria. Cancel security votes and lavish food/travel/vehicle/accomodation allowances if necessary. I believe fervently in Government being awake to its welfare obligations towards the most vulnerable and needy in society. Laudable effort from Aregbesola. They should ensure they sustain this good precedence.

Aregbesola said that the scheme, tagged “O’Elders’’, was aimed at assisting aged persons who could no longer fend for themselves.

Do the numbers from the state support your claim? The world Bank? Have you checked if it is via a LOAN, and how much interest the state is paying on the loan(assuming it is)?

Not a smart question! Sustainability must have been considered before starting the program. Except you're insinuating that Aregbe is a dumb which I'm sure he's not.

Good step in the right direction,i hope it is sustained and not just another cheap political game to win the popularity of the old Pa`s and Ma`am`s of Osun State. We need to take care of the elderly one`s.They are weak today as a result of their struggles to give us a better life just as we are struggling today to take care of our children.
