Abia shuts illegal motor parks in Aba.

It is no longer business as usual for illegal motor park operators in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, as the Ministry of Transport has ordered the seizure of commercial vehicles, operating at unapproved motor parks.

Ukpai Agwu Ukpai, commissioner for transport, Abia State, recently gave a two-week ultimatum to operators of illegal motor parks in the commercial city to move into approved parks or face sanctions from government.

The ultimatum expired on August 1, 2012. To monitor the compliance level of the operators to the ultimatum, the commissioner, in company of members of a taskforce from his ministry, paid an unannounced visit to the commercial city; consequently, the illegal park operators, who refused to heed to the warning were caught unawares as vehicles found loading were impounded by the taskforce.

The commissioner urged commuters, who looked stranded, to go to approved parks to board vehicles to their destinations and warned that government would no longer condone the activities of such illegal park operators, who he accused of contributing to the defacing of Aba.

The state government also, last year, issued a similar warning to the operators of such illegal motor parks in Aba, to vacate in continuation of its sanitisation exercise to open up the area, which was defaced by residents in connivance with local government officials.

To ensure that the order was carried out, the state government set up a committee, which supervised the relocation of the transporters to approved motor parks.

However, few months after that exercise, the transporters returned to their old loading bays, thereby causing traffic jams in the area.

CityFile’s visit to Asa Road, where most of the illegal motor parks are located, revealed that the action of the commissioner is paying off as sanity is gradually returning to the area.
