I'll need more details - on your dash, there's a display that shows what gear you're in. Like this - PRNDS. It should usually highlight the selected gear in red like this - PRNDS

If there's a fault, the display becomes this - PRNDS

Thank u vry much 4 cumin 2 my rescue..My passat uses a 1.8 engine.D display is stil normal..D actual problem is dat,d gear is nt changing most especialy 4rm 2 to 3 nd most tyms wen i try 2 accelerate,d engine make a loud noise nd d vehicle doesnt move until i put of nd ignite again..because of d i jst take it 2 on my gear box cos it doesnt give me issues wen its dere,it jst doesnt move fast..Wat do i do cos my auto mechanic advisd i get a new 1?

Probably the forward fiber of the gear is burnt. A good auto gear expert can fix. He not, get a new one.
