Boko Haram Break 700 Year Old Tradition by Olanlere11: 10:12am On Aug 17, 2012
The Kano Emirate Council announced on Wednesday that it would not observe the Durbah activities during this year’s Eid-el-Fitr coming up this weekend.
Media learnt that this would be the first time the Sallah Durbah would be cancelled in its over 700 years history.
Traditional Sallah Durbah and other activities have been practised in Kano since the advent of Islam to the ancient city.
A source close to the Emirate council told our correspondent that the suspension of all traditional Hawan Sallah activities was done mainly because of the prevailing security situation in the state.
However, the council said it was  due to the  health condition of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who is the custodian of the tradition of the people of the state.
A senior councillor in the emirate, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, on Wednesday briefed newsmen in Kano after the emir’s meetings with all the district heads of the Emirate council, including the Dan Majen Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi.
He said, “The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, has directed me to inform all district heads and all other traditional rulers that traditional Sallah activities have been cancelled and everybody should stay indoor to celebrate the Sallah.’’
He said already, the council had taken steps to ensure that the Sallah was celebrated without any problem.
“The emir will only attend the Eid prayer on Sallah day,” he said.
Sanusi, who also holds the traditional title of Wamban Kano, added,  “All other celebrations during Sallah from Sallah homage, visit to the state governor and the traditional Hawan Nassarawa where he interfaces, with his subjects were cancelled in view of the health condition of the Emir”.
It would be recalled that the Emir had recently undergone medical treatment in the United Kingdom from where he returned about five weeks ago.
Sanusi urged the people to pray for improved health of the royal father and  for continuous peace in the state and the country.
