The Ogun State Government has expressed concern that not less than 25,000 cattle are being brought into its territory by Fulani herdmen via Benin Republic and Northern Nigeria.
The state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muyiwa Oladipo, raised the alarm in Abeokuta during a peace meeting with herdsmen and community leaders.
Mr. Oladipo did not say how he arrived at the figure he cited.
He however noted that the influx of cattle in the state was a result of its rich pasture, but quickly added that government will check the influx.
Mr. Oladipo said the government would establish a strong control post and monitoring task force to checkmate the mass movement of cattle from neighbouring Republic of Benin and other neighbouring countries.
The meeting however noted that the state government should create grazing zones across the state for the animals.
The commissioner said government had taken drastic measures to avert looming clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.
However, a consensus was reached at the meeting that government should support nomadic schools that would promote formal education and reduce the use of child labour by herdsmen.
It was also agreed that government should recognise the Seriki Fulanis as part of the Local Government Security Council, to give them a sense of belonging.
The Commissioner informed participants at the meeting thatthe state government was determined to prevent an outbreak of law and order in any part of the state. especiallybetween farmers and Fulani herdsmen.
The state, he said is also committed to promoting peaceful cohabitation, tolerance, mutual understanding and brotherliness among the two communities.
He called on them to shun any act capable of fuelling the crises in their settlements by remaining law abiding.
The commissioner advised the two communities to always hold regular peace meetings where outstanding disputes areamicably resolved.
The Yoruba monarchs from Yewaland, Seriki Fulanis, among other stakeholders across the state, appreciated the timely intervention of the state government at resolving the lingering crises through several peace meetings and committees.
They assured the government of their readiness to accept the resolutions of the meeting.

This commissioner is clueless and should be fired asap. Has he forgotten the antecedents of the Fulanis so soon? Instead of suggesting on how to flush them out of the state, he is deluding himself with provision of grazing land and recognition of a seriki so as to give them a sense of belonging.

See how accommodating the Yorubas can be!

I think we need to review the hospitality clause in our tradition ASAP. The invaders dont seem to appreciate it
