Just as you consume caffeinated drinks to ward off sleep, there are a host of other foods which do just the opposite. Yes, they help you experience deep slumber. So in case you are a chronic insomniac or are just having trouble sleeping for the last couple of nights, just try out the following foods and you will surely see the difference.
1. Banana
Banana is a rich source of potassium and magnesium – two well established muscle reluctants, hence bananas can help you sleep soundly at night. If you are averse tothe idea of a banana every night before sleep, just have it with milk or other foods so that you get a goodnight’s sleep without being bored with your dinner menu.
2. Dairy products
Warm milk has long been believed to induce sleep but even yogurt or butter has been found to help a person sleep well. But remember to avoid cheese, especially the delicious ones as their effectis just the opposite. Milk contains calcium, which apartfrom being good for your bones also helps in relievingstress, thus aiding your sleep.
3. Almonds
Just like bananas, almonds also contain magnesium which relax your muscles and help you sleep. So whether you take a handful of almonds or just some almond butter, rest assured you will sleep like a horse atnight.
4. Oatmeal
You already have it for breakfast, so why not try it at dinner? Oatmeal contains a host of nutrients that help induce sleep. It is also very inexpensive and easy to prepare. Just avoid making ittoo sweet as sugar can leave you awake. Instead tryusing fruit toppings like banana, which are sleep inducing agents.
5. Cherries
Don’t despair if the season of cherries is still a couple ofmonths away. Dried cherries and cherry juice are good enough substitutes to fresh cherries and will have a sound sleep at night. Grapestoo have the same effect though to a lesser extent. Cherries contain melatonin which regulates sleep and hence should be an important part of your diet if you want to sleep well.
6. Cereal
Carbohydrate rich foods give you a sudden burst of energy before an onset of sleepiness. Hence any food product containing complex carbohydrates is good for sleep. Besides, you can always add fruits to your bowl of cereal like cherries and bananas making it tastier and better for inducing sleep.
7. Herbal tea
Apart from its other good effects on your health, herbal tea also assists your slumber. Be it green tea or chamomile tea, it ensures you sleep well at night. But try to avoid ginseng tea as it seems to have the exact opposite effect on most people.
