The Federal Government has announced its plans to make this year’s Independence Day celebration a low-key event following security challenges facing the country.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, Minister of Interior Comrade Abba Morro said that the administration believes that proper foundation should be laid before any celebration.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan’s agenda has taken off, describing it as an athletic race which should not be celebrated until he wins.

“The world today is troubled; there are cries of infrastructure decay in Nigeria and insecurity. Rather than commit money into celebration, we will rather use it for the development of the country, it will be too immature to embark on flamboyant activities while there are large number of unemployed youths in the country,” he said.

Morro also used the medium to unveil programs lined up for the event. Insisting that the low key celebration will begin with a presidential retreat for civil society organizations on September 6 and National Award on September 17.

I hope that Nigerians will see their president at the Eagle Square on that day. We do remember what he said earlier in the year about his trip to Brazil during one of the BH attack:

...He added that Boko Haram was attacking churches in order to instigate religious crises. Mr. Jonathan said, “We are working and will crush it. They are changing tactics. They can as well be attacking mosques to instigate Muslims against Christians.”

Asked to justify his recent trip to Brazil, President Jonathan declared that he had no regrets, noting, “Boko Haram’s main agenda is to destabilize government like all other terrorists.” The Nigerian president stressed that suspending his trip would have given terrorists a boost.

We do not want any flamboyant activity but we want our President to talk to us on that day from the Eagle Square, as was the usual practice. Your government is tackling insecurity, so we will have no problem on that day.

We anticipate your presence. Thank you Sir.

Good one from the retardeen but not good enough. The question is, must we celebrate at all?
