Hi all, I want to get my first car and will be more or less using it to learn all about the practicalities of cars and driving. I want to get the oldest model of golf available, one that i won't be scared of getting bashed. How much does such go for? i'm thinking of the type taxi drivers use in lagos

Hmm, the oldest Golf you'd get would be the Golf I.

Engine options were:

1,043cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (40hp)
1,093cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (45hp)
1,272cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (55hp)
1,457cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (70hp)
1,457cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 3-speed automatic (73hp)
1,588cc, carburettor, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (75hp)
1,588cc, fuel injected, 4 cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual (110hp)
1,781cc, fuel injected, 4 cylinder petrol, 5-speed manual (112hp)

1,457cc, diesel, 4 cylinder, 4-speed manual (50hp)
1,588cc, diesel, 4 cylinder, 4-speed manual (54hp)
1,588cc, diesel, 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual (70hp)

The VW Golf I ran from February 1974 till February 1984, though the Cabriolet was produced from January 1979 through till July 1993.

I'd ignore the 1.0 - 1.3 versions, they're painfully slow, and struggle to climb a moderate gradient with 3 adults on board. sad The 1.5 was the only Golf I available with an automatic transmission, so if that's you're forte, that's the one for you. Auto boxes in those cars are pretty tired now, the 1.5 was replaced with the 1.6 about 1982, so no more automatic option. cool

I'd also avoid the early carburettor versions, they were fitted with the dreaded "Pierburg" carburettor, notoriously unreliable, in the UK from a dealer, they cost £550! shocked Most users here fit a replacement "Weber" carburettor, at £130 a fraction of the cost of the original, and with a manual choke, very reliable too. cool

My choice would be the GTI models, 1.6 - 1.8. Dirt cheap here in the UK, typically between £50 - £1,000, not sure what they'd cost in Nigeria, but shouldn't be bank-busting. Worth noting the GTI models were only available as a 3-door, unless you source from South Africa, where they were available as a 5 door, and production was still going strong up till 2005, though the 1.8 GTI was down graded to the "Citi Golf". Still fuel-injected though. cool

So, plenty to choose from!

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you. undecided

All those cars should be available in Nigeria, not sure what state they'd be in though. undecided

I knew that the info from Siena would spin your head.

A Golf 1 is almost not available, so forget about it
A Golf 2 would cost you about 300-450 naira minimum. It is the best in terms of maintenance and cost. Even new parts are made in China so they are cheap locally

Hmm. Would I do that? wink

As I don't know what the oldest surviving models in Nigeria are, I thought it best to give her all options. cheesy
