Final Year Calculus (economics) Is Making Me Depressed. Changing My Program. by shilling(f): 6:03am On Sep 14, 2012 |
I'm in a Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree. I switched from a BS cos I wanted to avoid math as much as possible. So far, I've made it through with a C in the calculus course after failing once. I have A's and B's in my other econ courses and unrelated electives. Now, in my final year I have to deal with 5 calculus based courses because I pushed them back to the end. I'm in 2 this semester and I can't take it, 3 weeks in!! My advisor suggested I do a BA general degree with a concentration in econ and Poli Sci (I have many Poli Sci electives. I love it!!). However, my school says that this program is not recommended for grad school. I plan to do a masters degree a few years after grad. Any advice on grad school and job prospects with this degree? What should I do? I live in Canada btw. 1 Like |

I think there should be grad schools that offer Political-economy programs. Or you could apply to banks, since you've taken some economics courses. Also, you can pursue a law/paralegal degree after getting your BA. I'm a political science major too, so that's what I'm aiming for (law/paralegal degree). Theses suggestion are by no means exhaustive. Anyway, good luck in school. |

as an Econ grad myself, my advice would be that you shouldnt do Economics in graduate school as you will encounter A LOT of mathematics, econometrics and calculus which you would absolutely hate if you are not math inclined. About 40% of those in my program switched majors because of this. I did my undergrad/postgrad in uk/usa so I understand what you are going through to an extent. I suggest going for postgraduate programmes in political economy just as CFCfan suggested and you just continue with d mix of econ and politics in your undergrad. start applyin to internships and do as many as u can whilst in grad school or undergrad so that finding a job wont be so difficult post-graduation. I shld be in BC soon too; all d best! 2 Likes 1 Share |

Try as much as possible to scale through. I know how you feel. I downgraded from bachelor of economics to Bachelor of Arts with major in politics and economics. I enrolled into a Master of Arts in economics.. It was really hard and I didn't do well. I finished and started another master of science in international and development economics in ANU, and now doing a PhD in Economics. It's way too mathematical at the graduate level but I hated maths and did it. With determination you can do. If it comes too bad, switch and if you are still interested in economics, go for a two year MA in economics offered by some unis in Canada like Carleton, Windsor et al. |
