Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of economic growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come. Delta State schools are now taking a new shape by our performing Governor Emmanuel Eweta Udughan across the 25 Local Government areas of Delta State, he has engage in this revolutionary change and has achieved alot in this short period among these are;

Within the period under review, his lead team through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary education embarked on a massive upgrading of infrastructure in all public primary and post primary schools through the following measures:
i. The upgrading of 12 selected public secondary schools to world class standards such as St. Patrick’s College, Asaba (completed; Ogbemudein Secondary School, Agbor and Nana College, Warri amongst others.
ii. A total number of 137 new classroom blocks were awarded for construction in 2011 while 67 classroom blocks were given out for rehabilitation/renovation in the same year and the projects are already 85% completed. Construction of 6 classroom blocks each in 33 schools using the Eternit modular panel and renovation of classroom blocks in 11 schools in selected riverine communities affected by the Niger-Delta crises.
iii. 8302 students’ furniture and 1066 teachers’ tables and chairs were supplied to various schools across the State in 2011. Provision of 4,000 desks for students and pupils at a cost of N80 million and 1,064 teachers tables /chairs at a cost of N44 million for riverine schools were also undertaken.
iv. Books, science materials, technical equipment, computers, instructional materials such as charts, world globes and maps, physical & health education equipment, were procured and distributed to various schools across the State.
v. Vehicles were also bought for inspection duties for the Headquarters and some of the field offices of the Ministry;
vi. Construction of examination halls and perimeter fencing in some secondary schools in the State were undertaken during the period under review;
vii. Construction of students’ toilets and boreholes in various schools across the State.
viii. Construction of teachers/staff quarters in some selected riverine and upland schools in the State.
ix. Printing and supply of 12,000 copies of customized school attendance registers and diaries as well as 5,000 copies of policy guidelines. These items have since been distributed to schools;
x. Procurement and supply of Science Laboratory Equipment and Reagents for schools across the State.
b) Technical Education
There are basically six (6) Technical Colleges in the State which provide technical and vocational/skill based education for Deltans. Within the period under review, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has accredited several courses for the six Technical Colleges. These courses include Welding & Fabrication; Motor vehicle mechanic; Refrigeration; Electrical/Electronics; Catering and Hotel Management; Plumbing and Automobile Craft Practice. Pipe fitting; Block laying and concreting and Business Studies.
Indeed this is a dream come true, waiting to see more!!!.
