Rumours have wings they say. Just say one thing, irrespective of whether its true or not, if its interesting enough, it will end up circulating rapidly. This exactly can be said to be the situation with the new Christian conspiracy theory on Satanism, the Satanic Church, their musical artists, superstars, and other instruments at their disposal with which they intend to lure unwary youths, and the world in general to satan, and subsequently, Hell.

The Satanic Church is not even as Satanic as your pastor would have us believe

The Satanic Church, like most people already know, is a religious organization founded by Anton Lavae, in America, 1966. The organization is basically a brain child of Christianity as it tries to defy the sacred practices of Catholicism. Apart from this, the church is not nearly as harmful as is its name suggests. The principles establishing it, just like those of other religions, only gear towards making the lot of mankind better. The Church has its own pope (Popularly known as the Black Pope), has its own liturgy rituals, has praying methods, and holds seminars for youths where they are advised to refrain from the taking of drugs. And generally, this organization can be confidently called another goody goody church, but for its wildly unorthodox name.

Now, a picture of Anton Lavae, the Black Pope of the Church of Satan till 1997, shows him making a kind of symbol with his fingers. In this picture, two of his fingers are raised gently, creating a kind of horn, while the rest are folded in. This should not have mattered as it could mean just about anything. But then, after sometime, it became clear that top politicians like George Bush, Barack Obama; Musical stars like Chris Brown, Jay Z, wrestlers like Hitman, and a whole lot of other superstars display this sign with slight differences!

The news broke out immediately; the church of satan and their 666 symbol. Shallow interviews were made, books were published, dvds circulated. All projecting that every super star that makes this sign is a member of the church of satan, has sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune, and intends to draw souls to Satan!

This assumption, or assertion holds no water from which ever perspective you look at it. But Pastors and fundamentalists have been popularizing it and the gullible public have been swallowing it hook, line and sinker. That’s why I have taken the pains to bring out the reasons why this conspiracy theory is another hoax



The V and horn signs never originated from the church of Satan. The V sign, often used by Michael Jackson, existed long before the Church of Satan. It is used to denote victory and in 1969, it became the United Nations symbol of peace and friendship. It therefore became absolutely normal to see politicians of all extractions using it here and there.

Also, the Horn sign existed before the advent of the Church of Satan. This sign has always been used by Texans, the Home state of America’s ex-president George Bush. It was popularized by the Texas University Basket ball team and when used over there, it means “hook ‘em” and is the sign the school team always made whenever they scored or defeated a team. George Bush, a staunch fan of the University team, has continued to use this symbol wherever he goes. A picture can even been seen of him and his wife making the sign while with the queen. It has absolutely nothing to do with Satan. Its more of a national thing. Telling the public where he comes from!



The Horn sign in other countries like Italy, was believed to shield people from badluck, or usher in good luck. Hence, superstitious people used it whenever they felt threatened by evil spirits or people. The apogee of the usage of this sign in this way came, when the Italian president was visiting patients in a hospital, and as superstitious as he was, he made the horn symbol behind him with his left hand to protect himself from getting infected, while shaking hands with patients with the other hand. Quite unfortunately, the camera men behind him captured it properly, and the next day, it became national news!

The Horn sign is also one symbol musical artists and their fans use indiscriminately in musical videos and concerts alike. When used this way, it simply means that the musicians are having a good time. Period. Fans of musicians like Britney Spears use it to show their musical goddess that they enjoy what she does and there is nothing even remotely fetish about it. Its just like Jay z and his illuminati pyramid symbol. Fans use it to identify themselves, and also appreciate his personality.



Finally, another brand of the Horn symbol is currently being popularized by no less important a couple, than the first Family of the United States, The Obamas. This sign of theirs is basically the same thing with the conventional horn sign. The only corruption is that while making theirs, they usually stick their thumbs out, thereby resulting in three horns, and not two.

When Obama changed some of the policies of the U.S. allowing gays to proudly serve in the military, and garnering support for same sex marriage, it became clear to Christians and other fundamentalists that the President isn’t a friend to their cause, so what did they do? They immediately pulled up pictures of the president making this sign, compared it with that of Anton Lavae, and before one could say “Jack Robinson”, The President was declared not just a high ranking church of Satan member, but also the Anti Christ the Bible talks about. Now, isn’t that a bit too much to heap on Poor Obama?

In the midst of these fuzzy allegations, Christian fundamentalists forgot just one thing. That the symbol made by the Obamas is merely the only way to tell the deaf “I love you” in sign language.

In conclusion, when you shout something loud enough, people are bound to believe it, and follow you, no matter how uninformed, or unreasonable that thing is. The horn sign, as we have seen is by no means a trademark of the Church of Satan. Satanists use it to depict a deity, Baphomet, which was allegedly contorted by the Catholic Church, in a bid to condemn the templars to death a couple of centuries ago. They may also be using it to depict satan and his two horns (though they do not believe in the existence of satan and only proclaim him to disgust Christians] or the scapegoat, but that by no means implies that it didn’t have other meanings before they adopted it.
