It was a shocking revelation yesterday, when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) came out  with documents on how the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, was allegedly convicted by a London Court.

There are 3 issues I have with that report.

1. I am not so sure that the police officer is correct in giving out the prior conviction of an accussed until trial is over and it got to sentencing stage if Mrs. Ibori or Mr. ibori or both of them is found guilty. Not unless there is a dispute as to identity. In any event it is a DNA evidence/fingerprints so little dispute will arise from that.

2. Secondly, there has been another disputed account of IBORI being found guilty by a court in Nigeria, if assuming we don't have one presently, we have a central database of criminal database with fingerprints and DNA evidence that dispute in Nigerian court will not have arisen and it will have been confirmed that it is the same James IBORI in all the cases like as in the UK.

3. Most importantly, If all the criminal convictions are true, whether IBORI declare those conviction before he became governor and if he did so, did they still allow him to contest for governorship, win and sworn in as governor. then there is something not right about Nigeria political system.


Just out of curiosity, what has happen to IBORI bail application, has he been released on bail or he is still in his 5 star hotel with morning visit to Kaduna Prison to mark register.

EFCC tendered the evidence of his prior conviction to support their argument that he should be denied bail. As an ex-convict he could be a flight risk if granted bail.
