If you think of your hair as nothing but a bunch of dead cells, you would be very wrong. Hair can in fact be the indicator of a lot of things – hair can tell you a lot about your health. Let’s take a look at what valuable health information our hair holds for us.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flaking of skin, itching and discomfort. It isn’t harmful in itself, but it could indicate one of several things. Dandruff could be triggehairred by stress, and could also be caused by skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Sometimes the dandruff can be controlled by shampoos and over the counter applications, but often it could be the sign that medical treatment is required.
Some people experience yellow colored, greasy dandruff; in which case it could be caused by an inflammatory skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis.
While some amount of hair fall is normal – some experts say it’s OK to lose up to a 100 strands a day – however excessive hair fall could indicate problems. Thinning or falling hair can be caused by thyroid imbalances and other medical conditions.
Eating disorders, severe dieting and nutritional deficiencies could also cause hair loss. If it is an eating disorder that is causing hair fall, it can also be causing a lot of damage to other internal organs of the body and the bones and can cause long term damage.
Falling hair can also indicate that you are under a lot of stress. Stress is implicated in many different diseases including heart disease, stroke and so on so that falling hair could just be the warning sign for you to do something about controlling the stress.
There are some other reasons for hair loss too – pregnancy, childbirth and lactation are also known to cause the kind of hormonal changes that cause hair loss – the good news is that this will resolve over time.
Very dry or brittle hair can be caused by several different reasons. One possible cause is that you’re subjecting your hair to too much stress – blow drying, heating, chemical relaxers or perming solutions, coloring and other hair treatments are known to take a toll on your hair.
Dry and damaged hair or split ends can also be caused by excessive sun exposure. In cases it can also indicate that your diet is poor and that it doesn’t have adequate nutrition in terms of vitamins, minerals and other essentials for the hair.
Unhealthy hair could also be an indication that you need to change your medications. Certain types of birth control, steroidal medications, medicines for depression and even heart burn medications are known to trigger hair fall.
Your hair can also indicate whether some toxin levels are high in the body – hair can help to reveal levels of aluminum, mercury, arsenic and lead in the body. Analysis of hair can show whether there are higher levels of some toxins in the body or if there are some nutritional deficiencies that need correcting.
