NIGERIA PLANS TO NEGOTIATE WITH CAMEROON BAKASSI REDEMPTION
Nigeria will not appeal the final decision international, just 10 years ago, placed the Bakassi Peninsula in Cameroon's sovereignty. It is the Attorney General Mohammed Bello Adoke has himself communicated this decision: "The government has decided that it will not be in the national interest to seek a review of the 2002 judgment of the International Court of Justice" he said.
The appeal period expires on 10 October. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has not followed the recommendation of the Senate calling for the reopening of the case.
However, if the disclaims Nigeria to reopen the case on the ground of justice, it does not abandon its claims of this small territory oil less than 300 000 inhabitants, still hoping to achieve by means of the bilateral negotiations or the financial transaction:
"The Government is committed to ensuring people living in the Bakassi Peninsula's determination to explore all avenues to protect their interests, including negotiations to buy the land," said the Attorney General.
"We call on all those who feel Nigerians in the Bakassi Peninsula to remain respectful of the law to give the various initiatives undertaken by the federal government the best chance to succeed."
