At least even if the drone didn't work probably because they might not know how to operate it, Nigeria is still improving. How many african countries make use of drones today ?
Even if they spent so much, it's still an attempt to improve our poor defence.

Why has the country been compromised?

It is widely known that certain foreign elements are providing security to the president and providing his current security details.

What a joke, you might say. These same foreign elements are the same who have sold outdated equipment to the government and are going around Abuja installing CCTV and bomb detection equipment around the capitol, technology decades old.

Huge sums of money have changed hands for second rate equipment

The government pays for a Rolls Royce car but gets a VW Beetle instead!!

Did they have any insurance policy for the drones?. A manufacturer's warranty should be provided, and backed, by the manufacturer of the drones.
Re: Isreal Sold Non-Functional Drones To Nigeria For $240m by DrMuzungu(m): 12:18pm On Nov 05, 2012
Someone in Nigerian government was watching Hollywood movies too much, and believed that "drones" will tell right away where militants are, where this or that is, and god knows what else. So they ordered few pieces of that MAGIIIICAL THING THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING, just like the crystal ball. Little they knew, such sophisticated machines require a lot of maintenance, qualified and well trained personnel to operate them, and a lot of additional equipment on ground. Why didn't Israelis explain it all to them, that I don't know.

This is a funny shi.t! grin

Is this a case of bad drones or operational incompetence?

Why did they have to deal with some faceless sacked Mossad isreahili to a known representative of the company that actually builds these vehicles?

No doubt, giving out contracts during OBj's tenure was so corrupt and lacked due process but when it came to very sensitive millitary hardwares like UAVs; procurement procedures were followed.

Somebody is loosing out on kickbacks.

Horus: Did they have any insurance policy for the drones?. A manufacturer's warranty should be provided, and backed, by the manufacturer of the drones.

U can guess dat this is just another shady deal with some top officials who'll get richer from this mess. So in this situation, I don't think those kind of things like insurance/warranty will be enforced.

illitrate: Nigerian defence and security equipment contractor, Alh. Rabiu Hassan, yesterday, alleged that some Israeli security contractors (names withheld) were fleecing the nation of huge sums of money in hard currencies by supplying either non-functional equipments or collecting mobilisation fees without making supplies.

The contractor told journalists in Abuja that at a time the nation was facing dire security challenges, three Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAVs, popularly known as drones, supplied by the Israelis were rotting away in a hangar in Benin because they were non-functional.

He added that even at that, Nigeria was made to pay far more than the cost of the most sophisticated drones currently used by United States of America, USA.

Hassan, who said he had petitioned the Presidency and relevant anti-corruption agencies, said although he was a contractor himself, he had to cry out for a probe into the activities of the affected companies with a view to arresting the situation.

He said: “As we talk, there are three Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, which are popularly called drones, supplied by the Israelis which have never worked. They are parked right now at a hangar in Benin. They have never worked since they were supplied.”

He said the non-functional drones cost the nation $240 million, adding that the Israeli behind the drones deal had operated in the country for over a decade and had infiltrated the top echelon of successive administrations in the country, where he had entrenched himself.

He equally disclosed that another set of two Israelis were on the verge of sealing a deal for leasing two spy satellites to Nigeria at a cost considered to be another rip-off as they had asked Nigeria to pay 145 million Euros for a project, which cost had been put at $40 million by Imagesat, the manufacturers in Israel.

Hassan said: “I have personally gone to Israel and found out from the manufacturers what the cost is. It is $40 million for the total project. It is curious that they (contractors) are quoting 145 million Euros.

“The Israeli company does not quote in Euros, they only quote in dollars. Nigerians must ask questions: is there any such contract at $145 million? This can’t happen elsewhere in the world.”

Hassan, who said he was crying out as a patriotic Nigeria, disclosed that he would be at the State Security Service, SSS, and the Office of the National Security on their invitation to give more details on his petition.

According to him, he had earlier made a preliminary statement at the SSS and was determined to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet. He said the entire activities of the Israeli firms in the nation’s security sector must be probed.

Ricky_Ross: I am happy that this Hassan is bringing this up so we will know.
But I suspect he is angry he didn't win the contracts, he sounds jealous or envious. If he was awarded the contracts he wouldn't be here ranting. If you check or probe him he must have done some similar deals...
right on point!!

Can you probe the military? who should be questioned? The contractor or the signer of the contract? Is the petitioner a Lebanese?

I think the title of this post is very wrong.
I would rather believe that "Dubious/incompetent Nigerian officials acquire Non-Functional Drones from the Israelis for $240m".

How could we, at the government level, be this blind to receive dys-functional items at any price?

Did anyone read meaning into the bolded? grin

It's all politics! Two firms are bidding for a lucrative contract from the federal government. The firm which is on the verge of losing out is wiping up sentiment by playing subtle racism to deny its bitter rival the deal.

Is the intention of this write-up not clear from the bolded?

$240 million dollars is enough to buy 3 wide bodied Boeing 737-600 aircraft
or 24 modern helicopters, 6-8 average business Jets. this is what the Nigerian government spent in buying
3 remote controlled drones

PATHETIC country that has no vision for its citizens

Should we be buying drones from foreign countries after 52 yrs of independence and a vast well of engineers who have schooled in the best schools in the world?

Instead these Nigerian professionals are forced into applying for jobs as trailer drivers in Dangote.
Hisss. Very pathethic.

Am sure it will cost half that price to develop a drone in Nigeria. We just lack believe in ourselves and our systems.

The country needs to refocus. SERIOUSLY

Serves the country right
