Clemzy16: Agbo is very safe. Mind you, it has a limit to wish you can take at a particular time. It cures alot of sicknesses and It's cheap. It has put alot of hospitals out of business no wonder medical expert go against it. It has been used by our fore-fathers for ages that's why they lived long and strong.

Agbo is good,if it isn't tested to be gOod,it would've gone into extinction since. There are some ailment that we believe cures faster, and better with herbs, than conventional medications.I.e measles, chicken pox etc.
Before the advent of white man's medicine, what was our fore father taking when ill?
Most of us,like forming unnecessary, whereas they take this things.
Nigeria, and inferiority complex. Most white man's medication are made from herbs,so what's the big deal about Herbs,or Agbo?

Kamanda: An Agbo a day keeps the Doctor away and makes you strong the African way.

an agbo a day may seem to keep d doctor away, because u refuse to see him. But den with time u may find urself becoming a ''perpetual customer'' to d doctor when the damages done by both the agbo (the constituent herbs of which u don't know) and the illness which you have refused to treat properly (i.e seeing trained doctors). Pls a word is enough for the wise, visit a specialist doctor when you are sick, most of these herbal concotions are dangerous in the long run, especially to your kidneys, liver, etc

u've got it all wong, man. First there's no single medication that cures everything.
Second, i agree with u that these ''white man's medications'' are made from herbs. But then they are made from herbs only after rigorous laboratory analyses to determine the actual chemicals in these herbs that are desired for the particular ailment in question, i.e the active ingredient which they then extract and package as medications. Even after this rigorous processing, these drugs are still known to have side effects, at times very harmful effects. What then do you think of these herbal concotions being sold on the streets? Mind you, as there are sweet mushrooms, so also are there toxic/ poisonous ones.

Can u tell me wen NAFDAC was established and when our fore-fathers started using herbs?

If u dnt like agbo dnt use it, dnt bring NAFDAC into dis matter. Agbo is the natural remedy for diseases. God created agbo but man created NAFDAC to protect some conglomerate like smithkilme Beschamp, Glaxo, pfizer and other multinational pharmaceutical co.

The agbo my grand-mother has been using sine 1927 do not hav NAFDAC approval and she is hail and hearty dan most women in the city.

Agbo is the best remedy for any ailment if used as prescribed by the trado-medical doctors. It fits in with our (african) body system.

Well-talk, una all talk am well. All you've said are truth! One thing I want to add is that, herbs are natural medicine to natural man. It has been in use ever before religions started. We can not overestimate the relevance of herbs to human longevity neither can we shy away from the fact of how herbs have ignorantly be the cause of some human death.
The paramount thing is education. For instance, there is a particular leaf in the bush that when any animal dares or mistakenly eat, death is the end. Same is applicable to human being. But with the advent of education, it's the ignorants that patronise street Agbo hawkers.
Most importantly, it is adviseable to get diagnosed to know what type of sickness before you patronize Agbo. Most sickness have same symtoms but if asured of your problem, you can just enter your yard and prepare it yourself hygienically.
Most hawkers have no knowledge about herbs, they just prepare anyhow things just to make money. But if you patronize those who are versed in herbs effective useage, it is best than those chalks we swallow.
Herbs are more valued than anything else in india, china, indonesia, etc so do not let us deceive ourselves in Nigeria with Nafdac.
Methusela, abraham, noah, job, moses, all feasted on herbs and they lived longer. The gradual rate at which people reject and neglect herbs usage, is equivalent to the gradual rate at which life expetancy reduces.
My father died at 120 two years Ago and let all my enemies hear me, I will use 120 as well.
May God bless you all to pass 120

I am a witness of herbal user, in 2010, I hit my toe on a stone which, after 2 months the nail removed and started growing after 3 months while I thought its bn healed, meanwhile, there was also in-growing which was bringing pus out. I went to see a doctor who said I was going to need 33k naira to remove the in-growing. Which I cudnt afford then, I cudnt wear shoe, like 3 doctors said I was going to remove it, that no AMT of drug wud cure it. Then came the miraculous day, the herbal hawker saw my toe bringing out pus and said, " bro I fit give u medicine to cure dis thing o" I said its only operation that "shall" do it, he laffed like nollywood doctor, seriously, he accepted his offer and he charged me 1200 naira, gave me black soap and a liquid; believe you me, after four days, it was like a magic o, the pus stopped, I started wearing shoe after 6 days! I paid only 800 naira and the guy was happy, thinking he has even cheated me or so. Though, I am a clinical scientist, yet, I prefer herbal prescription to some "chalk". Samething after I left abuja camp this July.................. Another testimony entirely nairalander.

Which agbo are you asking about? The one I'm familiar with is agbo jedi jedi, for stomach ache, drank it every morning as a child, stops/prevents stomach ache, and is 100% reliable to the best of my knowledge, can't say for the rest.

Can be deadly or safe. It depends on what's in it, how much of it you take and its side effects.

Like modern medicine, agbo (herbs) CAN be useful in treating aliments but its efficacy depends on how applicable it is to treat your particular ailment. For example, Tylenol works for most headaches but will probably do very little or nothing to cure kidney problems. Also, overdosing Tylenol can lead to liver and kidney problems, and the same is true for any herbs also.

What you have to realize is that some modern medicines are derived from herbs but unlike agbos, medicine manufacturers will seek to find an effective dosage that won't harm your body and they mostly use a subset of the chemicals present in the herbs to develop the medicine. But do you want to trust your health with someone hawking on the streets?

See the attachments for drugs and their sources:

phineas: It is said science has proven a known plant in africa and the amazon cures cancer in the lab at least 8-10 times faster than any known anticancer drug.problem is in excessive dosses causes parkinsons. So who defines the safe dose.

Most medical drugs are from herbs.the difference is a lot of research has gone into ensuring the side effects and doses to ensure they are safe.for every medical drug administered all possible effects and doses can be defended, thats why companies spend millions of dollars on research.

so someone by the roadside or some unknown company offers u unverified herbs to cure all.....and you buy for yourself and ur child?
I'll say "choose ur poison",but choose wisely.

Hello! Agbo is not a poison, what makes you people reason like this is the way it is being abused by Agbero and some street hawkers. Do you know millions of people who patronize YEMKEM, OKO OLOYUN D ONE & CO. over this liquor? If the whole world could be clamouring for YOYO BITTER then what are we saying. We should not condemn what treasure we have cos of the chalky materials given to us in the hospitals. Have you witness those who went around cutting their anus because it was coming out when defecating, then embrace real agbo seller who will give you ordinary soap that will relief you for ever.

Some may work, but guy na naija we dey! Everybody wan rush make money, them go just cut grass, mix camfor, them go call amazing mixture

Yes IT WORKS but I'll never buy by the roadside for the same reason I won't buy food in the same place. I'd rather buy the ingredients from those old mamas, clean and prepare it myself. They have dosages too.

And there's no way a single medicine will cure all the things listed above - there are different variants of it with different ingredients.

Actually it's the same thing YEMKEM prepares more hygienically and obtains NAFDAC approval for, meaning it's been tested under lab conditions. It's just like chinese herbal medicine. The good thing about them is that the ingredients are used in the natural form, meaning that there is very low probability of side effects, unlike orthodox medications. A lot of the agbos are actually for prevention, more like supplements.

Dont know much about agbo or the types they sell. One thing I can say is that, when I was in Naija in 2009, and was hammered with fever and body ache when I visited Abeokuta. My mum's friend went and got some agbo (dont know where from). I'm not exaggerating, they boiled it, I drank 1 cup of that bitter stuff, slept for like 6 hours, when I woke up my clothes were soaked in sweat, I sweat out all that fever in 6 hours and felt like a new born baby!
