It was a cool and calm evening as students of the University of Maiduguri went about their daily routine. Some were in their halls of residence, some in the classroom doing assignments, while those living off campus were on their way home.

But suddenly, just within the twinkling of an eye, loud reverberating explosions hit one of the surrounding communities of the university, popularly called Gwange; a place close to Mairi, where majority of students living off campus usually reside. This initial explosion was followed by several explosions, intercepted by sporadic gunshots.
