Globacom is sponsoring a spectacular four-city golf tournament, the Glo Golf Tour 2012 with the biggest purse in the sub-continent.
Globacom's Commercial Coordinator, Folu Aderibigbe (middle), at the unveiling of the Glo Golf Tour 2012. With him are the Secretary of the Professional Golfers Association PGA Mr. Bolaji Olajide (right) and Globacom's Head of Post-paid Sales, Kamal Shonibare.

The tour will hold from November 8 to December 9, 2012 in Asaba, Sagamu, Abuja and Oturkpo, which will also host the grand finale. Top Professional and Category “A” Amateur golfers across West Africa will compete for the prizes which include the N62.5 million Pro-Am purse, a brand new Toyota Corolla for the Hole-in-One winner and a N1 million Veterans' prize.

From the opening ceremony at Asaba Golf and Country Club in Asaba Delta State on Thursday November 8, the tour will move to a new city every week where the golfers will play for between N10 million and N15 million for pros and N500,000 for amateurs in each venue, culminating in the grand finale in Oturkpo with the Senate President, David Mark as Chief Host.

In addition to cash prizes, a variety of other prizes including free airtime, Blackberry devices, High Speed Internet modems and mobile telephone handsets will be given to lucky participants.

The lush greens of the Elephant Cement Club, Sagamu will play host to the golfers from November 14 to 17, after which they will move to the IBB Golf & Country Club, Abuja from November 20 to 23. From Abuja, they will go to putt for the N20m cash prize for pros and N500,000 for amateurs in the grand finale from December 6 to 9, 2012, at the Oturkpo Golf & Country Club, an emerging golfing destination.

The Golf Tour will feature about 50 amateur golfers and 300 professionals in each city.

Speaking at the press conference to announce the commencement of the tournament Globacom’s Folu Aderibigbe said the company is determined to establish its pedigree as the biggest supporter of golf in West Africa. He noted that with the sponsorship of the 2012 Glo Golf Tour, the company has raised the stakes in golf sponsorship in West Africa.

"By making the Pro-Am purse the biggest in West Africa, we hope this will raise the standard of the game and motivate our professional golfers to step up their games and aim for continental and ultimately global glory," he said.

"We also believe that this tour will provide an opportunity for our high net-worth subscribers, particularly those who are golfers to enjoy their passion, network and socialise," said Aderibigbe.

He acknowledged the efforts of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to sustain a high competitive standard in the game. “We also note that the PGA has been doing a lot to enhance the growth of the game in Nigeria”, he said.

The General Secretary of PGA, Mr Olajide Bolaji, said the top ten ranked golfers in Nigeria including Amos Cobbler of Ghana, who is also a member of the PGA in Nigeria, Gboyega Oyedeji, Andrew Ocho Odo, Edet Umoh and the new kid on the block, Tafa Abubakar who turned pro just two years ago, will play at the tournament, adding that “by now, some of them are already in Asaba in readiness for the Tee off on Thursday”. He commended Globacom for being the First corporate body to package a tournament for professionals. He also disclosed that other top ranking professionals from Ghana, Kenya, and Cameroun will also compete for cash and honours in the tournament.

Glo Golf Tour: Nigeria's Odoh edges out Ghana's Korblah in Asaba
Former Nigeria Number One golfer, Oche Odoh, last Saturday, November 17, bounced back to winning ways as he emerged victorious at the second leg of the Glo Golf Tour West Africa 2012 at the Sagamu Golf Club, Ogun State.

Odoh, who was in sixth place after Round 3 and far behind leaders Gboyega Oyebanji: 4 under 209 and Gift Willy: 3 under 210, after 54 holes, fired back with purpose and determination to win the giant slice of the N10 million prize for the pros in Sagamu after 72 holes.
Odoh, who has represented Nigeria at international tournaments, shot an impressive 69 on the day it mattered most to finish the final Round at 3 under 281.
While Odoh did enough to win, Oyebanji threw away a 5-shot lead on count back at the beautiful Sagamu Golf Course, acclaimed for its landscaping and topography. Going into hole 11, Oyebanji had built a solid lead but all that fizzled out when he recorded a double boggle at holes 12 and 13, cutting down his lead to half.
While the IBB Golf Club based Odoh, held his nerve to keep his 3 under onto hole 18 where he maintained par, his club mate, Oyebanji further dropped more shots to finish 1 under 283 in the second place.
First runner-up of the Asaba leg of Glo Golf Tour West Africa, Nigeria-based Ghanaian golfer, Emos Korblah, was also affected by the extremely hot weather and undulating course to finish third with 284 par.
His country mate, Vincent Torgah, winner of the first leg in Asaba could only manage the joint fourth with Air Assault Port Harcourt star, Gift Willy. Both shot 285 one over. Shortly after Odoh was officially declared winner, he noted that he tried to play safe, knowing that the course could be tough.
"I played cautiously because the course here is tricky and tough. I did all I had to do to keep my par and not to be too ambitious knowing that it is easy to underrate this course and l am glad it worked out fine for me," he said.
He also praised Globacom for setting up the Glo Golf Tour which he said had motivated West Africa's golfers to improve their game. Glo is offering N62.5m as prize money for West African golfers in a four-city tour.
From Sagamu, the tournament moves to Abuja on Tuesday, November 19.

Korblah is Glo Golf Tour Champion

Ghanaian and Nigerian dual tour card holder, Emos Korblah, has won the final tournament and the biggest Purse of the maiden edition of the Glo Golf Tour West Africa. Korblah played one under par 71 on Sunday, the last day of play in the 72-hole game, but still managed to beat countryman Vincent Torgah who played 70 on day four to the second place. Korblah played 72 on day one, improved to 69 on day two, made his competition best on day three with 69 points and then dropped back to 71 on the last day.

He amassed a combined score of 283 while Torgah, who played better on day four, made a combined score of 284, having played 73, 70, 71, 70. Korblah entered the Glo Tour as tournament favorite and was expected to win in Otukpo being a member of the Otukpo Golf and Country Club, venue of the Grand Finale, and having performed well throughout the Tour. Korblah came second in Asaba, took the third place in Sagamu and won in Abuja before proceeding to Otukpo, his home turf.

The Surprise of the competition was Edet Umoh who came from behind to grab the third place in Otukpo. Although Umoh was one of the hopefuls of the Tour , he failed to glitter throughout the competition and even in the first three days of the Grand Finale. He however mustered enough mental strength to shore up his performance in the last 18 holes to end up with a three-under- par score. To end up in third position he beat the pack of 43 finalists and Ghana's Ghenyor A, who came fourth, with a combined score of 292. Umoh played 77, 73, 73, 69.

His poor play before the last 18 holes robbed him of a better position on the score board. Korblah went home with N2.7m cash being the lion share of the N20m cash prize for the Grand Finale. Torgah took home N1.5m and Umoh N1.2m. Fourth placed Ghenyor got N960,000.

The rest of the prize money was shared to the rest of the 43 finalists. Others who received their prizes in Sunday's impressive gala night and prize winning ceremony included Mohamed Liman who won a brand new Toyota Corolla 2012 model for scoring a-hole-in-one in Abuja.

The amateur winners also took home several prizes including iPads , motorcycles, sewing machines, golf kits, refrigerators and airtime , all courtesy of Globacom, at the ceremony. Speaking to journalists after his game, Korblah said that the tour was not easy, even though he had boasted that he would win on the familiar Otukpo course.

He commended Glo for putting up the competition saying that the Glo Golf Tour was special because of the prize motivation and for being a region wide tournament, accommodating golfers from all over West Africa. "Glo has done well," he said. Senate President, Senator David Mark also praised the sole sponsor of the Tour, Globacom, for its heavy investment in sports, saying that other companies should emulate Glo's good job as "the government alone cannot fund sports".
