WE HAVE A DENSLY POPULATED GROUP OF (SO CALLED)PERFORMING ARTISTES IN THIS COUNTRY WHO HAVE BEEN ERRONIOUSLY BRANDED HIP HOP, AND MOST OF OUR ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISTS ARE TO BLAME.
FOR SO MANY REASNS. HIP HOP AS A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT BEGAN TO MAKE ITS PRESENSE FELT GLOBALY IN 1979. THAT WAS THE YEAR A MAN KALLED JAJ -(JAKOB AKINYEMI JOHNSON) KURRENTLY ON AIR PERSONALITY RHYTHM FM+SILVER BIRD TV- LAYED THE FOUNDATION OR SOWED THE SEEDS FOR THE GROWTH OR SPREAD OF THE HIP HOP "RAVE" IN NAIRA LAND.
MOST NIGERIANS WHO YELL HIP HOP HIP HOP EVERY DAY DONT EVEN KNOW THAT JAJ OF RHYTHM FM STARTED IT ALL. AS FAR BAK AS 1979.
85% OF THE SO KALLD HIP HOP SKRIBES IN NAIRALAND GOT INTO HIP HOP AROUND THE EARLY-MID 90.S.
WITH THIS IN MIND' WE KAN BEGIN TO APPRESIATE THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SOCIALY RELATED IDENTITY KRISES WE HAVE IN OUR HANDS.

WE HAVE THOSE WHO KALL THEMSELVES ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISTS..WHO DIDNT LEARN ANYTHING ABOOUT HIP HOP IN THE MASS KOMMUNIATION KORRIULUMS OF THE UNIVERSITIES THEY "GRADUATED" FROM..
ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISTS WHO LEARNT NOTHING ABOUT "HIP HOP" IN THE "INSTITUTES OF JOURNALIZM" THEY GRADUATED FROM.
WHO-INSTEAD-BELEIVE THEY ARE "EDUCATED" AND THEREFOR HAV THE AKADEMIK ENDORSEMENTS THEY NEED TO MAKE MIS-LEADING PRONOUNSMENTS ABOUT A MOVEMENT THEY HAVE BLUNTLY REFUSED TO STUDY.

LET IT ALSO BE NOTED, THAT THIS IS NOT SET OUT TO CONDEMN ANY OF THE PUBLICATIONS MENTIONED BUT TO CORRECT THEM AND POSSIBLY EDUCATE THEIR WRITERS, SINCE-AS HAS BEEN MENTIONED- NON OF THEM HAS RECEIVED AN EDUCATION IN HIP HOP CULTURE.

WE ADVOCATE THAT EVERY ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST, TV/RADIO PRESENTER (AND THE LIKES) MUST ENROLL FOR THE ONLY AVAILABLE CURRICULAR PROGRAME ON HIP HOP CULTURE SINCE THEY WILL HAVE COURSE TO BE ENTANGLED WITH HIP HOP RELATED ISSUES MORE OFTEN THAN NOT.

NOW WHERE DO WE REALLY START FROM?? DO WE BEGIN WITH THE MORE OBVIOUS GOOFS OF OUR JOUNALISTS?? OR DO WE BEGIN WITH THE MUCH LESS OBVIOUS?? THE GREEN SNAKES IN THE GREEN GRASS, WHO LOOK HIP HOP, ACT HIP HOP, DRESS HIP HOP, EVEN "REP" HIP HOP.. . BUT ARE AS FAR FROM THE KULTURE AS THE EAST IS FAR FROM THE WEST.
DO WE NEED TO XPLAIN TO PEOPLE WHY DBANJ AND WHIZ KID HAVE NO BUSSINESS IN THE HIP HOP CATEGORY??
OR DO WE START BY EDUCATING THAT NAETO C,s AMERICAN ORIENTATION DOES NOT NESSECERILY QUALIFY HIM AS A HIP HOP ARTIST OR HIP HOP HEAD?? THAT THE BIGGIE LOOK ALIKE STUNT AND ABILITY TO RAP WHICH ILLBLISS CAN BOAST OF DO NOT PARTICULARLY TRANSLATE TO HIP HOP CREDIBILITY??
BEFORE WE CONTINUE IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED THAT THOSE VIEWING THIS CONTINUE READIN WITH AN OPEN MIND AND A MENTALITY STRIPPED OF AAAAAALLL SENTIMENT OR STOP READING.
THE TRUTH SOMTYMES HURTS AND IS ONLY FOR MINDS THAT ARE MATURE ENNUFF TO TAKE SOME PAIN.

IN LAGOS CITY FOR INSTANCE, WE HAVE THOSE WHO HAIL FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY (EVEN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD) BUT WEAR AGBADA AND GELE AND KNEEL BEFORE ELDERS WHEN THEY GREET SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE-OVER THE YEARS-(BY ASSOCIATION) BEEN INFLUENCED BY YORUBA CULTURE. THIS DOESNT MAKE THEM ORIGINAL YORUBAS OR ABORIGINAL LAGOSIANS OR WESTERNERS. IT JUST MEANS THEY HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY YORUBA CULTURE OR THE LAGOS CITY LIFE ETHIC. SO MUCH SO THAT MORE THAN 2/3 OF THE LAGOS CITY POPULACE AMOUNT TO AN ALIEN DEMOGRAPHIC BUT ARE STILL CALLED LAGOSIANS.
BUT IF A CRISES WERE TO BREAK OUT IN LAGOS CITY WHICH INVOLVED WANTON LOSS OF LIVES AND PROPERTY, WILL THESE LAGOSIANS REMAIN IN LAGOS INSPIGHT OF THE INHERENT DANGERS?? THE ANSWER IS NO. THERE WILL BE AN EXODUS OF NON-INDEGINOUS "LAGOSIANS" TO THEIR VARIOUS "HOMES".. .. WHY?? BECAUSE KULTURAL INFLUENCE DIES NOT MAKE U A CITIZEN OR INDIGEN OR DENIZEN OF ANY SOCIETY. KULTURAL INFLUENCE MIGHT GIV YU ACCESS TO SOME FAVOURS AND PRIVILEDGES WITHIN SAID COMMUNITY IR SOCIETY.. ..BUT WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, YU WILL BE DISPLACED.. AND INSPIGHT OF YOUR INFLUENCED LIFESTYLE, YU WILL BE SHOWN THE DOOR (IF U HAVNT ALREADY FOUND IT YURSELF (IN FLIGHT)

SOME WRITERS AND EVEN SOCIOLOGISTS HAVE CALLED THIS THE HIP HOP AGE. NOT BECAUSE THE WORLD IS ENTIRELY POPULATED WITH CORE HIP HOP PROSELYTES BUT THAT A MAJORITY OF THE WORLDS HUMAN POPULATION ARE INFLUENCED BY AN EXTREMELY VOCIFEROUS KULTURE THAT CAN BE TRACED TO AN EQUALY POWWERFUL MINORITY GROUP CALLED.. .. ..THE HIP HOP NATION.

CALLING ME A CATHOLIC JUST BECAUSE U SEE A CHAPLATE AROUND MY NECK IS A TOLERABLE MISTAKE.. CALLING ILLBLISS HIP HOP JUST BCAUSE HE LOOKS LIKE BIGGIE SMALLS.. ..IS GROSS ERROR..EVEN FROM A BOOK AS REVEREED AS THE BIBLE WE MUST ALL HAVE LEARNT NOT TO JUDGE A MAN BY HIS OUTWARD APPEARANCE.
NOW THE RAPPER KNOWN AS ILLBLISS ONCE WAS 1/5th OF A GROUP CALLD THORO BREDS WHICH INCLUDED ONE OR TWO PERSONS THAT WUD BE RIGHTLY TAGGD REALL HIP HOP.. .BUT AS HAS ALREADY BEEN CLARIFIED IN THR COURSE OF THIS THESIS, ASSOCIATION DOES NOT ALWAYS TRANSLATE TO INITIATION.

AND THERE IS MUKH MORE TO HIP HOP THAN THE ABILITY TO RAP AND BREAKDANSE AND DJ AND BEATBOX. NOW HERE..TO A LARGE DEGREE..IS WHERE THE KRUX OF HIP HOPS MIS-REP IN NIGERIA LIES.
HIP HOP IN NIGERIA IS STILL BASIKALY RAPPIN AND BREAKIN AN DEJAYIN. POSSIBLY BEKAUSE THE SO-KALLED RAPPERS AND JOURNALISTS WE HAVE HERE ARE YET TO TEAKH US ANY BETTER.
RIGHT NOW.. ..URS TRUELY AND THE HIP HOP SKHOOL ARE THE ONLY QUARTERS WHERE NIGERIANS KAN LEARN ABOUT HIP HOP BEYOND ENTERTAINMENT AND HER NINE BASIK ELEMENTS.
AS LONG AS IGNORANSE ABOUT THIS PERSISTS.. ELEMENTS LIKE DBANG AND ILLBLISS AND NAETO SEE AND WHIZ-KID (AIDED BY OUR "ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISTS" AND OUR SO KALLED "HIP HOP SKRIBES"wink WILL KONTINUE TO PROLIFERATE THE SCENE AS "HIP HOP ARTISTES"

ONE KAN IMAGINE THE SHOCK A TYPIKAL NIGERIAN MUZIK ENTHUSIAST WOULD FEEL AT OUR MENTION OF SOME OF NIGERIAS KONTEMPORARY "GREATS". BUT THIS IS NOT ABOUT HOW POPULAR AN ARTISTE IS..OR HOW MUKH MONEY AN ARTISTE HAS MADE.. THE ISSUE HERE IS.. .. "HIP HOP? OR NOT" ??

SOMEWHERE IN THE BIBLE IT IS WRITTEN..THAT GOD IS NOT AS CONCERNED ABOUT THE WORDS AND DEEDS OF A MAN AS HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE "MOTIVES" BEHIND THOSE WORDS AND DEEDS. WE WILL NOW ATTEMPT TO JUDGE DBANG, WHIZKID, ILLBLISS, NAETO C, DAVIDO, SHINA RAMBO etc-NOT BY THEIR HIP HOP CLOTHS,HAND-SIGN LANGUAGE AND RAPPER-LIKE GESTICULATION-BUT BY THE MOTIVES BEHIND THEIR "HIP HOP DEMEANOUR" or BY THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR HIP HOP INFLUENCED CAREERS ON NIGERIAN YOUTH, ON THE NIGERIAN MASSES, AND ON THE PROSPECTS OF THE GROWTH OF REAL HIP HOP ON HOME SOIL.

WITH THIS IN VIEW, LET US TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT ILLBLISS AND NAETO C..A CLOSER LOOK AT DBANJ AND FLAVOUR AND P SQUARE AND EVEN TU FACE..THEN PLACE THESE PERSONS ON THE BACK DROP OF THE HIP HOP SCHOOLS DEFINITION OF HIP HOP, THEN ASK OURSELVES..WHERE IS THEIR "STRUGGLE"?? WHERE IS THEIR "REBELLION AGAINST ESTABLISHMENT"??
MANY hip hop enthusiasts AND INFACT "REAL HEADS" WILL NOT LIKE THE SOUND OF THIS BCUS THEY,RE QUICK TO ASSUME THAT "STRUGGLE" AND "REBELLION" REFER TO ARMED COMBAT OR MILITERY STYLE SEIGE AGAINST THE STRUCTURES AND STRICTURES OF THE SYSTEM. BUT THIS IS NOT SO.
WE WILL SOON XPLAIN HOW MEMBERS OF YOUTH SOCIETY IN ANY GIVEN LOCATION CAN REBEL AGAINST THE SYSTEM WITHOUT A SINGLE BLAST OF A GUN. WE WILL ALSO EXPLAIN THE TRUE NATURE OF THOSE WEAPONS THAT ARE REQUIRED IN THE STRUGGLE OR "REBELION" OF YOUTH AGAINST THE MAINSTREAM.
IT MUST ALSO BE XPLAINED THAT "MAINSTREAM" REFERS TO A SOCIAL CONDITION IMPOSED UPON A GENERAL PUBLIC BY THE GOVERNMENT OR ESTABLISHMENT.

NOW, FOR EASIER REFERENCE..WE MUST MENTION AGAIN THAT ALL THE RAVE-MAKERS OF NIGERIAS CONTEMPORARY MUSIC SCENE ARE-IN THIS THESIS-BEING PLACED IN TWO MAJOR CATEGORIES. THE REAL HIO HOPPERS AND THOSE WHO ARE MERELY BEING INFLUENCED BY WAY OF THE UBIQUITOUS NATURE OF THE HIP HOP PHENOM.
THE "ARTISTES" THAT HAVE BEEN MENTIONED ABOVE-HOWEVER-HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON: THEY-JUST LIKE ALL THE NON YORUBA "LAGOSIANS" IN LAGOS STATE-ARE ONLY BEIN INFLUENCED BY THE VOCIFEROUS NATURE OF HIP HOP CULTURE, NOT HIP HOP !!
THAT NAETO C AND ILLBLISS PLUS MANY OTHERS HAVE QUESTIONSBLE HIP HOP CREDIBILITY SURPRISES NIGERIANS BUT THOSE WHO ARE SURPRISED AT THE DIS-CATEGORISATION OF THESE (TWO)PERSONS MUST REMEMBER ; THE FACT THAT JUDAS WAS AMONGST THE 12 DID NOT MAKE HIM A BELEIVER.
