A recent ranking of African Universities by Africa.com has placed the University of Lagos in the 9th position. Cairo University, Egypt ranks first on the list followed by yet another University in Egypt, American University in Cairo.

According to a statement on their website, “While students from across the continent continue to move abroad to study at leading learning institutions in the U.S. and Europe, Africa boasts its own league of great universities. Presented below is Part I of Africa.com’s Top 10 Universities in Africa. Part II will feature the Top 10 Universities in South Africa, a country that is home to enough academic heavyweights to populate its own list.”

Here is the list of 10 Universities ranked top in Africa:

1. Cairo University – Egypt
2. American University in Cairo – Egypt
3. Mansoura University – Egypt
4. Makerere University – Uganda
5. University of Nairobi – Kenya
6. University of Dar es Salaam – Tanzania
7. University of Botswana – Botswana
8. University of Ghana – Ghana
9. University of Lagos – Nigeria
10. Ashesi University – Ghana

The Statement on University of Lagos: Established in 1962 with the aim of training professionals for the newly independent Nigeria, the University of Lagos is a comprehensive university that strives to learn through “knowledge and research.” The University houses nine faculties, and the Medical School is home to three faculties. With an emphasis on research, the University’s faculty has published over 1,700 papers, with the most publications coming out of the medical, science, and engineering faculties. In celebration of its Golden Jubilee, the University of Lagos will host a three-day research conference and fair with the theme “Research and Innovation for Economic Development in a Globalising Nigeria.”

Notable alumni include Nigerian television actor Francis Agu; publisher and film producer Wale Adenuga; Chairperson of the Nigerian Government’s Economic and Financial Crimes, Farida Mzamber Waziri, and HIV/LGBT activist Bisi Alimi. The criteria used for the ranking include the following: 1) undergraduate and graduate school reputation among higher education peers; 2) student selectivity for entering undergraduate class; 3) quality and quantity of faculty research, including depth of research facilities and engagement beyond immediate community, and 4) international student ratio—the degree to which institution draws students from outside of its national boundaries.

Did you check the methodology of the ranking?

Until it is ascertained that it is based majorly on merits and what Students might achieve in the school, it becomes just another ranking and anyone can do that btw.

acccording to webometrics, UNIben is 1st in Nigeria followed by Auchi polytechnic grin . Link- http://www.webometrics.info/en/Ranking_africa

and their methodology?

Objectives and motivation

The original aim of the Ranking is to promote academic web presence, supporting the Open Access initiatives for increasing significantly the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the universities to the whole Society. In order to achieve this objective, the publication of rankings is one of the most powerful and successful tools for starting and consolidating the processes of change in the academia, increasing the scholars’ commitment and setting up badly needed long term strategies

The objective is not to evaluate websites, their design or usability or the popularity of their contents according to the number of visits or visitors. Web indicators are considered as proxies in the correct, comprehensive, deep evaluation of the university global performance, taking into account its activities and outputs and their relevance and impact.

At the end a reliable rank is only possible if the web presence is a trustworthy mirror of the university. In the second decade of the 21st century the Web is key for the future of all the university missions, as it is already the most important scholarly communication tool, the future channel for the off-campus distance learning, the open forum for the community engagement and the universal showcase for attracting talent, funding and resources.

Point is, it is better to make the best use of the oportunity you have in ur institution than chasing shadows.

It depends on who is ranking and what's the ranking criteria.
Am surprise no South African university is among the first 10 universities in Africa, which is not possible.

Anyway here is another ranking and Unilag is not among.

That list is flawed.

Till you have Universities from all the countries in Africa, South Africa especially, you cannot claim to have a credible 'Top 10 Universities in Africa list'.

My 2 cents.

Thsiis a more credible list: 2012 WORLD UNIVERSITY WEB RANKING
Top 100 Universities and Colleges in Africa http://www.4icu.org/topAfrica/ Very surprising University of Nigeria, Nsukka didn't make top 100 in Africa while you have Unilag, Uni-Illorin, Ife, UI, UniBen, UniPort, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ahmadu Bello University, UniJos.

When did Uni of Agriculture Abeokuta become more prominent than the great Lions Den?? Oh well...

It is an irony that majority of the guys commenting on this thread are " educated illiterates" . The article stated it clearly that " Part II will feature the Top 10 Universities in South Africa, a country that is home to enough academic heavyweights to populate its own list” , yet some of the commenters above still questioned the reason why South Africa universities are not included, thus pronouncing the ranking as fake.
